There is still more than a week left in the Solstice of Heroes event in Destiny 2. While players continue to grind away, Bungie unveiled one final update to the event’s armor set visuals to appease player expectations.
This bit of news came with the latest This Week at Bungie article which previewed patch notes from the September update for Destiny 2. As players started to tinker around with the new glowing armor sets, they found the glow effect to not only be faint compared to last year’s, but also disappointing regarding the marketing images Bungie used.
Due to the overwhelming feedback, the studio decided to take a look at how the glows performed in-game. Thankfully, Bungie also found the difference between the appearance of glows in-game and the images used to depict them in the Eververse store to be significant.
The weakness of the glows were further exacerbated by the fact that the studio had decided to tie their intensity to the super charge of the player. This meant that if the player had just entered a destination or match their armor would glow softly. If they’re simply in an area where supers cannot be charged (such as the Tower), the glows would forever be at their faintest level.
As the whole point of the annual event is to acquire the glowing version of the armor sets, this did put a dent in player morale. Not to mention the fact that these “glows” are technically universal ornaments for each class sold as bundles in the Eververse for a hefty sum of 6000 Bright Dust or 1500 Silver, which is essentially $15 per character. In other words, more than a week’s worth of weekly bounty grinding assuming the player plays on all three characters.
Even though the studio doesn’t preview patch notes more than a week in advance, they did want to give a heads up on this Solstice of Heroes glow update before the event actually finishes. This might actually sway some players into buying these limited-time ornaments who had previously written them off after seeing the disappointment.
The article seemed to imply that the team has already finished preparing the tweaks for the armor glows, but no image previews were given. Update 2.9.2 inside Season of Arrivals is currently planned to arrive on September 8, and further details will be shared soon.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
