Fall is right around the corner and for fans of Magic: The Gathering, that means it’s spoiler season. The upcoming set, Zendikar Rising, releases in less than a month, which means the next three weeks will be full of brand new card reveals, exciting reprints, and a few teases for what Magic has in store for players when 2021 arrives. But before players get too far ahead of themselves, things will kick off today with a livestream focused on Zendikar Rising.
Although two Zendikar Rising planeswalkers have already been spoiled, today’s event kicks off true spoiler season and will likely introduce a handful of new cards and some of the mechanics that players can expect to see heavily featured in the upcoming set. Zendikar is a fan-favorite plane of the multiverse and the third visit to this location definitely puts some pressure on WotC to meet the high expectations that the Magic: The Gathering community has for a Zendikar-themed set.
Since its first appearance, Zendikar has always been about the importance of land (hence the Landfall mechanic). When the stream kicks off later this morning, it will be very interesting to learn how the game’s designers are playing around with that idea this time around and what new tricks they have up their sleeves. There have been rumors about the return of double-faced cards circling Reddit, but so far there have not been any credible sources for those theories.
To learn more about Zendikar Rising, fans should plan to tune in to Magic’s Twitch channel today at 8:00am PT. Although the event will be focused on Zendikar Rising, there have been some teasers that it will also drop a few clues about what else is coming to the world of Magic in the near future.
The event kicks off in just a few short hours and, after that, there should be lots of Zendikar Rising cards, mechanics, and other information to begin to analyze and theorize about. At this point, the two planeswalkers that have been spoiled don’t offer quite enough information to give players a solid idea about the direction of the set. It seems like Equipment may play heavily into the white/red archetype based on Nahiri’s abilities, but Jace’s powers are all loosely based around card advantage and don’t seem to offer any direct hints about other mechanics or themes at work in his piece of the color wheel. That said, most of those questions will likely be answered today, so be sure to tune in and then check back for additional information and analysis as the community begins to interpret everything that is revealed today and spoiled in the days to come.
In the coming days, we should learn a ton more about Zendikar Rising spoilers, mechanics, and more. Start studying early so that you’ll be prepared for a new standard rotation and the upcoming draft format.
Magic: The Gathering Zendikar Rising releases September 25, 2020.
