Splatoon 2 may not be getting the regular content updates it used to anymore, but Nintendo has been giving players something new to look forward to, so to speak, by bringing back classic Splatfest events for repeat performances. Two more of these are slated to take place before March 2021, and now it’s been announced that they’ll be joined by a Super Mario-themed Splatfest.
Amid this morning’s news-blitz of surprise announcements that was the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct, Nintendo confirmed that the Super Mario Splatfest will take place sometime in January (exact dates have yet to be revealed), making it the first new Splatfest since Splatoon 2’s climatic “Splatocalypse” event last year.
Luckily, Nintendo won’t be forcing fans to do something as divisive as, say, choose their favorite Mario brother. Instead, they’ll be choosing between two of the Super Mario series’ most iconic power-ups, the Super Mushroom and the Super Star. That still sounds like a tougher choice than usual, since the health-boosting Mushroom and invincibility-granting Star have both aided players in their own way countless times throughout the decades. If the choice is too hard to make, though, Splatoon 2 players can always fall back on the classic Splatfest tactic of picking a side based on whether they’re bigger fans of Pearl or Marina.
The Super Mario Splatfest isn’t the only Super Mario content coming to a non-Mario game in the near future. Nintendo also announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be getting Mario-themed furniture early next year. This goes to show that Nintendo is off to a pretty late start celebrating the franchise’s 35th anniversary, but hey, better late than never.
Splatoon 2 is available for Switch.
