Every year, Twitch runs a promotion called SUBtember, which gives a discount to first-time subscribers. But the Twitch promotion had some struggles this year, as it allowed more than just first-timers to take advantage of the discount.
The streaming company has had some hardships lately, including the firing of Twitch Partnership manager after an internal investigation. While that difficulty is certainly more serious, this newest hiccup is much more widespread, and one that Twitch needed to fix immediately.
The Twitch SUBtember promotion is designed to bring in new members to the Twitch community. The discount is nice for those who have been on the fence about becoming a subscriber of any given creator. It is not designed to simply allow people to re-subscribe for much cheaper. However, a bug was discovered recently that allowed members to unsubscribe to a channel and then instantly re-subscribe, taking advantage of the discount.
The @TwitchSupport Twitter page recently announced the mishap and communicated that it is now fixed. However, any member who took advantage of the SUBtember discount, whether nefariously or as originally intended, will be keeping the subscription at the promotional price. There is also no impact on creators, who have helped Twitch post record numbers.
With a reach as large as Twitch and the sheer scale of the company, it is only realistic that it would make some mistakes. Perhaps glitches in discounts and promotions are a bit easier to swallow than things like lawsuits involving female streamers, however. The good thing with regard to the SUBtember discount issue is that the creators haven’t been negatively affected and that the promotion still exists for those who have or continue to take advantage of it. And the promotion itself is very helpful for those who want to start supporting creators.
Twitch is in an interesting place, and one that many companies would be happy to be in. It is continuing to grow, has completely beat out competition like Mixer, and even seems a bit more set up for success with the COVID-19 pandemic than most. Even during the ups and downs of the company, it continues to see major streamers find genuine success. Recently, Shroud rejoined the streaming platform from Mixer and has become the fastest-growing Twitch streamer. So given some of the mix-ups or struggles that can occur with a large corporation, the platform seems to be handling most things as well as it can.
