The Batman Resumes Production Without Robert Pattinson

In a surprise turn of events, recent news had broken that production on The Batman had been completely shut down following a confirmed Coronavirus case on set. Speculation ran wild for a few hours before rumors began trickling in that the confirmed case was none other than Robert Pattinson himself, which was confirmed to be true shortly after. Just recently however, the Daily Mail has suggested that production is resuming without Pattinson for the time being.

While Warner Bros. declined to comment on the report when asked, the Daily Mail reports that director Matt Reeves is doing everything he can to continue filming without his leading man. This means filming anything that doesn’t strictly require Pattinson’s presence, including scenes where does not appear, and scenes that can be handled by his body double. It is difficult to say how much of the film can actually be completed this way, but if the reports are accurate, the production is chugging along as best it can in spite of the circumstances.

Pattinson’s sudden positive test is a troubling sign for film and TV crews working in the UK. It had initially seemed as though restarting filming outside of America was a great option, since the UK had been opening up sooner and theoretically would have been an easier location to keep the sets safe. Indeed many officials in film production assured press and public time and time again that they had the utmost faith in their ability to shoot safely and contain the spread of the virus. One official of the British Film Commission, Adrian Wootton, told the press several months ago: “We know that productions in the UK are rigorously following BFC Guidance with robust health and safety procedures in place, including stringent testing regimes, which is why any case of Coronavirus can be rapidly identified and appropriate self-isolating procedures implemented.”

There have been many different guidelines and procedures put in place in order to protect film and TV crews in the UK, from social distancing recommendations to optional seminars meant to encourage individuals to take care of their health and hygiene. Despite these rules, The Batman will no doubt face difficulties in working around Pattinson’s illness, and may have some legal recourse from a UK fund meant to assist crews that suffer delays due to the virus. It is unlikely, however, that the Coronavirus issues will be covered under the production’s already existing insurance plans.
