Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer Won’t Have Prestige

Ever since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hit the scene, Prestige Mode has been a staple of the popular first-person shooter franchise. For the uninitiated, Prestige Mode allows players to trade in everything they unlocked in the online multiplayer component to start back at square 1, but with an emblem to mark their progress as well as another bonus, usually a new slot for create-a-class. However, 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare did away with Prestige Mode, and it looks like that will continue with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

According to frequent Call of Duty franchise leaker ModernWarzone, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will likely not have Prestige Mode. It seems that the game will most likely use the 2019’s Modern Warfare multiplayer progression, where players are able to level up to a certain point in any given season. We know that Black Ops Cold War will have a Battle Pass, so this seasonal approach to progression does indeed seem to be the most likely scenario. This would be the first Black Ops game in history to not have Prestige mode, so it’s a big change for the sub-series.

However, ModernWarzone is sure to note that plans could change between now and when Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13. But considering how massively successful Modern Warfare has been, it’s hard to see Black Ops Cold War pivoting back to the Prestige system.

Luckily, fans have an idea of when they can expect to get clarification on this matter. At the end of the Black Ops Cold War reveal trailer, Activision confirmed that the multiplayer reveal would take place on September 9. It remains to be seen how extensive the Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal will be, but it will likely include information on progression, maps, game modes, and when exactly fans can expect the open beta to start.

As it so happens, the Black Ops Cold War open beta date has already leaked numerous times, with all the leaks pointing to an October 8 start date for PS4 gamers that pre-order the digital version of the game. Those that pre-order on PC and Xbox will get access a little bit later, and eventually the open beta will be available to everyone, regardless of if they pre-order the new game or not.

Between now and its November 13 release date, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans can also expect to learn more about the Zombies mode. Details are scarce, but it has been confirmed to be returning, so fans should find out more information at some point after the September 9 multiplayer reveal.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches November 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
