It’s taken over a full decade, but Black Widow is finally getting her very own feature in the form of the plainly titled Black Widow. Since the character’s first appearance in Iron Man 2, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the world around it, has changed dramatically in ways both expected and surprising. Actress Scarlett Johansson recently talked with Empire magazine about how the upcoming film, directed by Cate Shortland, mirrors those shifts.
One of the more important themes, according to Johansson, is a response to the #MeToo and Times Up movements: “It would be such a miss if we didn’t address that stuff, if this film didn’t take that head-on. I think, particularly for Cate, it was so important for her to make a movie about women who are helping other women, who lift other women up out of a very difficulty situation.” In fact, to her, this angle seemed so obvious that it hardly needed to be said: “Someone asked me if Natasha was a feminist. Of course she is, it’s obvious. It’s kinda an asinine question.”
This seems to be evident in what is known about the film so far from trailers and promo materials. It is all but confirmed that the Black Widow movie, which takes place before the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, will feature Scarlett Johansson passing the role of Black Widow to Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova in the film. The movie is also set to explore more of Black Widow’s past, and how she came to be the character we know as a part of the Avengers; a backstory which has only been hinted at in other films.
While the overall plot is still something of a secret, it is known that the villain of the piece will be Taskmaster: a highly skilled fighter who is capable of instinctively mimicking the abilities and combat skills of anyone they meet. Taskmaster’s identity has also been subject to speculation, as Disney has yet to even reveal who will be playing the character, indicating there may be an interesting surprise in store for audiences when the movie is finally released. Until then audiences will have to be patient to see if Black Widow lives up to the surprisingly long wait for its theater release.
Black Widow is currently planned to release November 6th, 2020.
