With the PlayStation 5 expected to launch at some point in November, fans are growing impatient. Even though the PS5 release date is right around the corner, Sony has yet to actually announce it or how much the console will cost. While fans wait for Sony to make an official announcement, plenty of PS5 price point “leaks” have made their way online, with the latest claiming to reveal the price of both the standard PS5 console as well as the PS5 Digital Edition.
The report comes from French website Xboxygen, citing multiple unnamed sources. Evidently, the standard PS5 will cost $600, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition price will be around $500. These price points match up with some previously leaked PS5 price points and are also similar to analyst predictions. Even if Xboxygen’s sources are unreliable, it wouldn’t be surprising at all for these to still end up as the official price points.
For those who may not be aware, there will indeed be two versions of Sony’s PlayStation 5 console when it launches later this year. The only difference between the two consoles is the PS5 Digital Edition does not use discs. As its name implies, it strictly plays digital content, and its lack of a disc drive means it will most likely be available at a lower price point. With the gaming industry moving continuously closer to an all-digital future, it will be interesting to see how many gamers opt for the PS5 Digital Edition over the standard console.
Of course, many may not even have a choice between either console this holiday season. It’s no secret that Sony expects the PS5 to be in short supply this year, thanks to a combination of intense consumer interest in the hardware and the COVID-19 pandemic impeding production. While Sony continues to insist that the PS5 will indeed be launching this year as planned, it’s possible that the uncertainties stemming from the pandemic could be why it has been hesitant to announce the PS5 price or release date in an official capacity.
Luckily, it’s quite possible that fans will get their answers about the PS5 sooner rather than later. Reports from reputable industry insiders have indicated that there will be some kind of PlayStation 5 event in September, with some going as far to claim that the event will be in the first half of the month. If so, it’s possible that the PS5 event will take place as early as next week.
It’s possible Sony will announce the PS5 price and release date at the event, but maybe it will just be used to showcase upcoming games instead. Rumors have pointed to Sony having another PS5 launch title up its sleeve, possibly even the highly-anticipated Demon’s Souls remaster, but fans will have to standby to find out for sure.
