Given their expansive nature, open-world games are some of the longest video games in existence. It’s possible to pour hundreds and thousands of hours into a single open-world game without exploring every nook and cranny. You may even backtrack multiple times in a single open-world game, adding to its length.

The following list was compiled using culturedvultures.com‘s “41 Best Open World Games You Should Play” list and cross-referenced with the completionist averages from howlongtobeat.com. Even the most sophisticated gamer will be bewildered by the sheer scale of these games. These are the open-world games that take the longest to beat.

Updated September 4th, 2020 by Zach Gass: Although the genre has lost some part of its novelty simply due to the explosion of its popularity, open-world games will never go out of style. Despite being confined to a virtual environment, there’s always something freeing and exciting about exploring vast worlds contained on a single disc. The icing on the cake with some of the more modern titles is simply the incredible amount of things to do, characters to meet, and sidequests to undertake that make players surrender to these digital realms.

15 Horizon Zero Dawn (60+ Hours)

Although the game has only 60 hours under its belt, according to howlongtobeat.com, Horizon Zero Dawn is one of those games with a world that players can absolutely lose themselves in forever if they wished. Playing as the ambitious and clever Aloy, gamers take up her teched-out bow and set out across a post-apocalyptic environment with mystic tribes, rolling hills, lush forests, and robot dinosaurs.

It goes without saying that the game’s greatest strength is its world, and in a genre where that element needs to be big, bright, and beautiful, this game undoubtedly succeeds.

14 Mass Effect: Andromeda (93+ Hours)

A masterpiece this game is not, but when it comes to size, scale, and hours of playtime? Credit is given where credit is due. Although the game does not live up to its predecessors’ deep stories and complex narratives and characters, if viewed as a stand-alone open-world RPG, does it really deserve so much flack?

The game offers literal planets for the player to explore with their team of colonists, along with that same blasting action-focused combat that made the original series fun. With over 93 hours of gameplay, surely it deserves a second chance.

13 Dark Souls (105+ Hours)

Prepare to die… a lot. With an impressive total of over 105 hours, there are more than a thousand ways for a wandering warrior to get absolutely wrecked in this infamous series.

It’s dark, it’s depressing, it’s gory, and at times it’s horrifically unfair, but for those sick and sadistic gamers out there who love the series brand of tougher-than-nails encounters and fights, it’s got more than enough to slay their appetites for carnage. An open-world it might be, but exploring it is going to be easier said than done for most players. It’s like the dark fantasy world is teasing the player to explore it one more time before being slaughtered.

12 Kingdom Come: Deliverance (123+ Hours)

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a bit of an unsung hero amongst the RPG community, namely due to its real-world inspired setting of medieval Bohemia. No dungeons, no dragons, no magic spells, but there’s definitely enough swords and swashbuckling in this 123-hour long experience.

It’s an acquired taste, that much is certain, but don’t let its lack of fantasy elements stand in the way of what’s honestly a deep and impressive game. In this game, players will climb through the ranks to go from a poor peasant to a sword-swinging knight in a more traditional medieval setting. It’s a different kind of ARPG, but one that deserves more than a few hours to experience.

11 Dragon Age: Inquisition (127+ Hours)

It takes players, on average, 127 hours to beat Dragon Age: Inquisition. As an open-world game, Dragon Age: Inquisition stands out for its online 4-player co-op and grueling dragon boss fights. It can take you over an hour to slay a single dragon!

There are moments when players will cross over into another section, breaking the illusion of an open-world. Regardless, Dragon Age: Inquisition can be labeled an open-world game given that each part of the game is more massive than most other open-world games. More importantly, there is an enormous amount of uninterrupted exploration that will give players pause.

10 Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey (128+ Hours)

The Assassin’s Creed series has always been a large and engaging open-world experience but since the debut of Assassin’s Creed Origins, the games have gotten bigger and deeper with their stories, lore, and places to explore. Not that anyone is complaining. Odyssey takes the frame laid forth by Origins and gives it a mythic twist by incorporating ancient Greece as its primary setting. Although this might be Kratos’s territory, the number of quests, enemies, and vast locations would make his bearded head spin.

9 Don’t Starve (128+ Hours)

The seemingly endless wilderness of Don’t Starve is the ideal setting for its open-world. In Don’t Starve, players have to survive in a dangerous wilderness inhabited by strange creatures such as giant monsters consisting of Dragonflies, Treeguards, Deerclops, and Reanimated Skeletons.

The game even pits you against a boss monster named “Klaus” who resembles Santa Claus. The objective of the game is not to starve. An abundance of content gives Don’t Starve tremendous replay value. On average, it takes players 128 hours to complete Don’t Starve.

8 Fallout: New Vegas (131+ Hours)

A rich story with a player-driven narrative, Fallout: New Vegas is considered to be the best game in the series—and the longest! Completing Fallout: New Vegas under the completionist method will take players 131 hours to beat.

The main story is about 27.5 hours, but those who take their leisurely time may beat all the game’s content in over 300 hours. Talking to all the NPCs, completing all the game’s quests, and unlocking those achievements or trophies will keep you up night and day.

7 The Long Dark (149+ Hours)

Completing The Long Dark will take players, on average, a whopping 149 hours! The Long Dark takes place in Canada, where players must survive in a frozen wilderness by scavenging for supplies. The game has an auto-save feature, so survival is ideal but not needed to progress through the game.

The game requires deep thought. The Long Dark provides a problematic experience, trying to survive with limited resources. You won’t encounter zombies in this post-disastrous world, but you will meet starving wild animals.

6 Red Dead Redemption 2 (156+ Hours)

5 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (162+ Hours)

Video game developers are continually raising the bar for video games, releasing unprecedented visuals with each release. As Hideo Kojima’s last release before leaving Konami, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was said to be unfinished in its state, but that didn’t stop Metal Gear fans from appreciating it.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the longest open-world games of all time, clocking in at 162 hours! Its convoluted story faced criticism for its questionable character selection, but ultimately, it’s stealth elements prevented the game from failing.

4 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (173+ Hours)

Those with an inquisitive nature will find enjoyment in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Its enemy variety and character customization are masterful. It’s not only one of the most exceptional open-world role-playing games of all time, but it’s also one of the longest open-world games. It takes approximately 173 hours to complete The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s gameplay’s enjoyability does not diminish as your progress through the game. In fact, it is the end-game that puts it alongside the greatest games of all time. The game’s scenery is diverse and beautiful.

3 The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild (181+ Hours)

Nintendo did not hold back with their latest The Legend of Zelda entry. How Nintendo will be able to top the expansive world of The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild remains to be seen. There is an abundance of quests and exploration for players to be immersed in the beautiful world of Breath of the Wild.

Completing Breath of the Wild is not easy in comparison to some of Nintendo’s other games. The tedious puzzles and challenging boss battles will extend the length of this game for many. To beat The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild takes 181 hours to complete.

2 Elite: Dangerous (213+ Hours)

This open-world space-flight simulation game is one of the most exceptional space games available. Elite: Dangerous puts you in control of a spaceship amid the Milky Way Galaxy. Is the Milky Way Galaxy a big enough open-world for you?

As detailed by polygon.com, Elite: Dangerous contains “more than 400 billion star systems for players to explore, trade and fight across.” Completing the game’s content takes 213 hours, but to map the entire game would take thousands of years! By the way, is it still considered an open-world if it’s out of this world?

1 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (226+ Hours)

And so we come to the end of this listicle. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a contender for the greatest game of all time. It is, however, an open-world game that takes the longest to beat. Quests in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim regenerate, so there is seemingly no end to the game.

When The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched in 2011, people were taken aback by its scenic locations, dragon battles, and rich story. Although the main story is relatively short, the end game is seemingly infinite. Don’t try; this game will take you 226 hours to complete!
