The Oculus Quest has proven itself to be an extremely popular VR headset, especially due to its unique ability to be used wirelessly. Its popularity has made it difficult to find one, but now it appears that getting ahold of one could be even more difficult, if not impossible.
The Oculus Quest released just last year, providing a full-fledged VR gaming experience without the need for a gaming PC. The headset quickly became a hot commodity, disappearing from store shelves and being resold at exorbitant prices, with demand increasing even further with the COVID-19 pandemic raging. However, based on reports from retailers, it seems that the Oculus Quest may have been discontinued.
According to multiple retailers in both the US and the UK, the Oculus Quest has been marked ‘end of life’ or discontinued, and no further shipments are expected to arrive. While many retailers still have a listing for the Quest on their stores, the vast majority of them are also sold out. However, this doesn’t necessarily corroborate the report, as the headset has been widely sold out for months now.
Although this information may come as a shock to VR enthusiasts or those who were still hunting for an Oculus Quest, it’s likely not bad news. Facebook has made it quite clear that Oculus has a future with the company, as Facebook recently announced that Oculus owners will need a Facebook account in order to keep using their devices. Those who already own and use Oculus headsets are being given until 2023 to comply, further adding evidence that Facebook isn’t putting an end to its VR headset lines.
Additionally, rumors and leaked mock-ups of an Oculus Quest 2 have been floating around the internet for some time now. The company is also continuing to develop new concepts for virtual reality, with one VR headset design looking like sunglasses rather than a traditional heavy, bulky headset.
Newer leaks have indicated that the rumored Oculus Quest 2 may actually have more storage space for the same price or even lower than the original, which also adds credence to why Facebook wouldn’t bother restocking the original model. Even if the Oculus Quest 2 lacks any particular upgrades, buyers would likely be thrilled to save some money when otherwise forced to face the current reseller prices.
Given the Oculus Quest’s massive popularity thus far, if the retailer reports are accurate, the most likely answer here is that Facebook is planning on revealing a new Oculus Quest at its upcoming Facebook Connect conference, which will be held in just under two weeks’ time. Fans will have to wait and see if the next big thing in VR is just around the corner.
