Super Mario Gets 35th Anniversary Emoji on Twitter | Game Rant

As of 2020, the Super Mario Bros series turns 35, a milestone that very few game franchises can say they have accomplished. To celebrate the anniversary, Nintendo released a new Direct that highlighted many new and exciting Mario experiences that players will soon be able to enjoy such as the long rumored Super Mario 3D All-Stars. To help players get into the festivities, Nintendo has announced that a Super Mario emoji is available for use on Twitter.

According to Nintendo, players can get ahead of the hype by using its new Twitter emoji. The emoji features the classic 8-Bit Mario from the original Super Mario Bros., and can be used by including #SuperMario35 or other variations in users’ tweets.

While Nintendo didn’t say what exactly it wants players to use this hashtag or emoji for, it’s likely that it would like players to share their favorite Mario memories from over the past 35 years. The company seems determined to invoke that feeling of nostalgia into currently available games as well, with games like Super Mario Maker 2 adding 35th anniversary content later this year.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars wasn’t the only new game announced during the Nintendo Direct. As a way of continuing the party into 2021, Nintendo announced that it would be releasing Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in February of next year. This port of the Wii U title includes not only an enhanced version of the original game, but new content as well. However, the nature of that new content wasn’t specified during the announcement.

Not only is Nintendo bringing Mario classics to the forefront on Nintendo Switch, it seems it wants to innovate on its formulas as well. Taking a page out of Tetris 99‘s book, Nintendo announced Super Mario Bros. 35. This battle royale game features 35 players attempting to knock each other out of the competition by sending defeated foes to other players.

While the content of Nintendo’s Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct was exciting, the some of the news surrounding the Direct was less than stellar. Super Mario Bros. 35 is set to release on October 1, 2020, however, it will then be removed from the platform on March 31, 2021. To make matters worse, Nintendo announced that Super Mario 3D All-Stars, clearly the headliner of this Direct, would not be available to purchase after March 31, including the digital edition.

This decision has angered and confused many players on Twitter. While it’s understandable that Nintendo might discontinue physical editions of the game in a post-COVID-19 world, discontinuing digital editions of an intellectual property that it owns outright on the last day of the fiscal year seems like an odd tactic to inflate sales. This move has caused many to accuse Nintendo of creating artificial scarcity, something the company was also accused of in 2017 when the NES Classic was discontinued, only to sell out again immediately when it was brought back 3 months later.
