A Link To The Past: A Step By Step Guide To Completing The Dark Palace

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a classic installment in the world-renowned franchise. The game revolves around the concept of two worlds, Dark and Light, laid on top of each other. Link switches between these two worlds throughout the story. Both worlds are mirror images of each other with small differences. For example, shops in the Light World have better options and prices than those in the Dark World.

As part of the Dark World experience, Link must find his way into the Dark Palace and destroy the evil that lies within. For the most optimal experience, explore the world around the palace before entering it and find powerful items to help on the journey.

10 Visit the Faerie Fountain

Just south of the Dark Palace gardens is a cave home to a faerie fountain. These magical fountains revitalize Link and restore health. The Dark Palace is a lengthy dungeon filled with danger, making the fountain and excellent first stop before the journey begins.

Luckily, there are no requirements or conditions to meet in order for this fountain to open. Simply walk in and interact with the fountain.

9 Avoid The Item Shop

Northwest of the Dark Palace is an Item Shop that takes the place of the Magic Shop from the Light World. Because this is the Dark World, even the shops are a bit evil.

The Item Shop offers one potion, one shield, and a cluster of bombs. The problem is that the potion and bombs are more expensive than they are at normal shops. Additionally, the shield is of inferior quality. Make purchases in the Light World whenever possible and only use a Dark World vendor when absolutely necessary.

8 Speak With The Storytellers

In A Link to the Past, there are special NPCs known as Storytellers. Two of these strange beings reside around the Dark Palace. The Storytelling Tree lives in a dwelling near the Dark Palace. And the Storytelling Bird resides in a cave south of the palace.

For a price of 20 rupees, the Storytellers offer valuable insight and tips. The Storytelling Tree explains the legend of the Triforce, and the Storytelling Bird hints about an eerie rock circle to the north.

7 Obtain The Quake Medallion

In the lake north of the palace resides a mysterious rock circle. There’s not much around it that indicates what to do other than an ominous sign. It warns against throwing items into the circle.

With a warning like that, there’s only one thing to do. Take the sign and throw it into the circle! Upon doing so, a fish appears and rewards Link with the Quake Medallion. This powerful item grants the hero the ability to slam the Master Sword into the ground, causing an earthquake. Having this ability comes in handy throughout the Dark Palace.

6 Journey To The Dark Palace

One of Link’s first goals in the Dark World is to reach the Dark Palace. The journey involves traversing a large maze full of thorns and having at least 110 rupees at the ready. Begin by following a series of arrows until they end. Beyond the arrows, seek out small holes within the thorns that might indicate a path to continue.

Upon accessing the central maze, enter it from the top and find Kiki the monkey. Offer him 10 rupees, and he guides you to the entrance. With Kiki’s help, Link enters the palace.

5 Conquer The First Floor Puzzles

The first floor of the Dark Palace is made up of 12 rooms. Look out for Helmasaurs and random puzzles throughout the floor. The primary goal here involves collecting the keys needed to continue through locked doors.

Link also encounters new enemies known as Terrorpins or Pometts early on. Avoid them until Link finds an item that penetrates their shells.

4 Obtain the Magic Hammer

Midway through the first floor, Link finds a dark room that requires a torch to light the way. The room houses a maze with several enemies. In the upper left corner is a chest of bombs and in the lower right, a Small Key. Find a dead end along the right wall and use a bomb to blast through to the next room.

Enter the hidden room and find a Dark World treasure called The Magic Hammer. This magical item has the power to move objects from Link’s path, granting access to locked areas. Link uses the hammer as an effective weapon as well against enemies such as Helmasaurs, Terrorpins, and most importantly, the final boss of Dark Palace.

3 Rest At The Fairy Pond

Further on, Link enters a room with three red Baris flying around a treasure chest. Open the chest and obtain a Map. This item helps Link better navigate the dungeon with the help of a minimap.

The walls on both sides of this room appear cracked and weak. Either bomb or dash through the wall on the right to discover a hole that leads to a Fairy Pond. Link uses these ponds to rest and regain health.

2 Delve Into The Basements

At the end of the first floor, Link finds a room with two green Goriyas and one red one. Additionally, there are two skulls with lootable arrows. When Link defeats the Goriyas, it triggers a new door opening.

Proceed through the door into what appears to be a dead end with a bouncing spike trap. Wait until the nearby crystal switch turns blue and hit it. The switch turns orange, revealing orange blocks leading to the right side of the room. Find a green cyclopsian statue and shoot it in the eye with an arrow. The statue activates, revealing a hidden staircase into the basement portion of Dark Palace.

1 Defeat The Helmasaur King

Clearing the final room in the basement unlocks a passage to the final boss. The Helmasaur King is a massive Helmasaur that inflicts damage through his claws, tail, and armored face. He also spits fireballs that Link must avoid.

After the Helmasaur King completes a cycle of attacks, he becomes immobile, allowing Link to attack. Equip the Magical Hammer and use it on the Helmasaur King’s faceplate. Chip away at the helm until a green crystal appears. The crystal is the monster’s weak point so focus all attacks on it. Arrows do the most damage, but if Link has poor aim, his sword suffices.
