Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is one of the most beloved, cult-classic gaming franchises ever created, and the series has influenced the childhoods of many in the gaming community. To this day, the second entry in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series remains one of the highest rated video games of all time, according to review aggregate sites like Metacritic. Now, as a way of promoting the newly remastered Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, a talented YouTuber has done something special.
Fans have been looking forward to this release since it was first announced that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 would be getting remastered. Even after how poorly the series’ fifth installment was received, fans were excited about a return to the classics, and one way Activision continued to fuel that excitement was to challenge popular YouTube channel The Hacksmith to created a self-riding electric skateboard that can kickflip at the touch of a button.
James, host of The Hacksmith, goes over the process of how the skateboard was created in a surprisingly high level of detail throughout the sponsored video. The entire thing was set to music that sounds as though it came straight off the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Spotify playlist.
This challenge was issued by Activision in order to promote the release of the Tony Hawk remaster. The result is impressive, and may even help encourage people to buy the game if they haven’t already. For how many positive reviews the game has received, new and returning fans of the series should have a lot to look forward to.
Not only was The Hacksmith able to build a fully electric, self-riding skateboard, but they were also able to program the skateboard to do a kickflip on command, and potentially other tricks could be programmed into the skateboard as well. However, there was a missed opportunity given the YouTube channel did not use the skateboard deck that came with the collector’s edition of the remaster.
With how well the remaster has been received by both fans and the gaming community in general, it feels like the extreme sports skateboarding genre may be making a comeback. Considering the recent release of Easy Day Studios’ Skater XL and EA officially announcing the highly-anticipated Skate 4, there may be a new wave of skating games on the horizon.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
