Final Fantasy: 5 Weakest Party Members In The Series (& 5 Strongest)

Final Fantasy is easily one of the greatest video game franchises of all time, and one need only look at the massive success that each mainline title has enjoyed to understand why this is the case. From single-player experiences that are brilliant in every sense of the word to MMORPGs that have grown to become some of the biggest modern successes of all time, there’s no avenue that this series hasn’t successfully explored over the past three decades.

One of Final Fantasy‘s biggest strengths is the rich cast of characters that accompanies every mainline title, with some of the most memorable JRPG characters of all time coming from this illustrious franchise. Using each and every one of these characters can prove to be quite a treat in battle… for the most part. The fact of the matter is that there are some party members featured in the games that are absolutely horrid to use in battle, mainly due to the fact that they barely deal any damage — especially when compared to some of the harder-hitting characters in the franchise. Keeping this statement in mind, here are five of the weakest party members in Final Fantasy, contrasted by five of the strongest.

10 WEAKEST: Kimahri Ronso (FFX)

Blue Mages are generally built to be weaker in Final Fantasy games, but it seems that Squaresoft took things a bit too far with Kimahri.

Starting out at the very center of the Sphere Grid, Kimahri never really comes into his own throughout the game, and the only way to make him a halfway-decent playable character is to shift him entirely to another person’s pathway — something that would negate the uniqueness of his character, as a result.

9 STRONGEST: Noctis Lucis Caelum (FFXV)

Final Fantasy XV might have its fair share of critics, but one can’t deny that the characters featured in this title are quite engrossing indeed.

Noctis is especially a character to be noted, although players might be blown away at how ridiculously strong this character is over the course of the game. His warping ability is pretty much broken in the later stages of the game, and his Armiger Unleashed ability is pretty much a death sentence for any player that might be unlucky enough to face this massive limit break.

8 WEAKEST: Edward Chris Von Muir (FFIV)

Bards are never a great character option in any Final Fantasy game, and one need only look at the sheer uselessness of Edward in Final Fantasy IV to understand why this is the case.

The fact of the matter is that Edward has absolutely no abilities of note, and does nothing to prove himself in the eyes of the player. The section of the story where players are forced to journey with him can prove to be downright torturous due to how useless this character really is.

7 STRONGEST: Sabin Figaro (FFVI)

A person who can suplex a moving zombie train is bound to be one of the strongest characters ever introduced in Final Fantasy, and Sabin definitely lives up to this mantle.

His Blitz abilities are genuine game-changers that can take care of even the toughest foes with relative ease, allowing the player to breeze through sections that they would be struggling with otherwise.

6 WEAKEST: Cyan Garamonde (FFVI)

Cyan might be a respectable swordsman for a number of reasons, but he’s ridiculously ineffective in battle — that is, unless the player is fine with eating a ton of damage to unleash just one move.

Cyan’s Bushido takes way too much time to charge up, and the damage output simply isn’t worth all the hassle that the party has to go through to accommodate this particular warrior.

5 STRONGEST: Shadow (FFVI)

Not only is Shadow one of the strongest party members in Final Fantasy VI, but he’s also one of the coolest as well. His backstory is the stuff of legends and the perfect example to show why this character so beloved among the fanbase.

In battle, Shadow can hit for a ton of damage and straight-up one-shot enemies with his Throw ability — something that players would be using a ton due to how ridiculously high the damage numbers get, even in the early game.

4 WEAKEST: Quistis Trepe (FFVIII)

Another Blue Mage makes her way to the list, in the form of Quistis Trepe. While her Blue Mage ability is admittedly a Limit Break, one can’t deny that this Limit Break is the worst in the entire game and hits for barely any damage, compared to the other hard-hitters in the squad.

In a game where pretty much any party member can become ridiculously overpowered, it’s these small things that matter the most.

3 STRONGEST: Squall Leonhart (FFVIII)

A great example of a character with amazing damage output in Final Fantasy VIII would definitely be the protagonist, Squall Leonhart. With his Critical Hits being completely in control of the player, each and every one of his attacks can definitely hit for 150% damage if the player times their triggers properly.

However, it would be impossible to talk about Squall’s damage without mentioning his amazing Limit Break. Lion Heart stands out in a game that is already full to the brim with amazing Limit Breaks, and the sheer amount of damage it can deal is truly breathtaking.

2 WEAKEST: Cait Sith (FFVII)

Not only is Cait Sith one of the weakest party members of all time, but he’s also one of the worst characters ever in any Final Fantasy game.

Any self-respecting player would find it in their best interests to just ignore this annoying character altogether unless they wish to make the game infinitely harder… and annoying to boot.

1 STRONGEST: Cloud Strife (FFVII)

Cloud is one of the most recognizable characters in the Final Fantasy, and its only fitting that he’s one of the strongest as well. He has the highest Strength potential in the original game, with his attacks hitting like a truck and decimating most enemies with ease.

As is the case with Squall, Cloud’s ultimate Limit Break is also a thing of beauty. While Omnislash is automatically activated at the end of the main game, players who decide to grind out the points in the Gold Saucer to get this Limit Break will be treated to one of the most powerful moves in the entire game.
