Harley Quinn is easily one of DC’s biggest breakout stars in recent years. Iinvented for Batman: The Animated Series, the acrobatic mischief maker has come a long way from being Joker’s lovesick tag-along, grabbing the spotlight in several solo projects. Her most recent solo gig is Harley Quinn, an adult animated series that sees Quinn forging her own path to villainy, taking quite a few potshots at the rest of the DC universe along the way.
The series has had two seasons so far, and despite the show’s popularity, a third season is still in some doubt. This is likely partially due to the show starting out on ‘DC Universe,’ a DC specific streaming platform that hasn’t done as well as the publisher hoped. The show has since moved to HBO Max, finding a much bigger, more appreciative audience ever since. One of those fans is none other than A-list director James Gunn.
The director had been watching the show recently, and made a Twitter post to show off his dog barking at an animated hyena that appears in one episode. Of course, with Gunn’s huge internet presence, the producer/writer for the show, Patrick Schumacker, took notice. In a response to the initial tweet, Schumacker thanked Gunn for the shout out, and pondered whether or not the ‘Gunn Bump™’ would help the show get its third season, admitting he had no idea himself.
In a surprise response, Gunn took his admiration one step further, actively encouraging people to go watch the show in hopes of convincing DC to pick the show up again. In his tweet he wrote “Let’s hope. Everyone watch Harley Quinn on @hbomax and help get them a well-deserved season three!” While fans still have no idea whether the show is even being considered for a renewal, the mounting pressure from both the creators and big name fans will hopefully sway DC’s opinion, and might make them consider giving the show another shot. Until then, all of Harley Quinn’s rude, absurd adventures and friends can be seen on HBO Max streaming.
