Skyrim: 10 Unanswered Questions We Still Have About Morthal

Skyrim is one of the most immersive RPGs ever made. Hundreds of quests and NPCs with 24-hour schedules help sell to the player that Tamriel is a real place. Delving through dungeons and uncovering items is a great part of Skyrim, but just as enjoyable is uncovering the game’s lore and character backstories.

That said, not every story in Skyrim has an ending. Whether due to cut content or the game never elaborating on something, there are many quests and NPCs in the game that are obviously unfinished. Take Morthal, for instance. This small capital is home to some of the most interesting characters in the game, yet many of this area’s most intriguing elements are never resolved. Here are 10 unanswered questions many still have about Morthal in Skyrim.

10 What Happened To Overthrowing The Jarl?

Via: heorotlinea (YouTube)

Few of the Morthal NPCs care for their Jarl, Idgrod Ravencore. In fact, one of her stewards sends the player on a short quest meant to overthrow her. Named “For the Good of Morthal,” players send a message from Gorm to Captain Aldis in Solitude. Players that read the letter will know that it implies a rebellion must begin to overthrow the Jarl. Thing is, completing this quest results in nothing happening. Was this plot thread forgotten about by Bethesda?

9 What Is The Threat Idgrod Is Referring To?

Speaking to Idgrod will reveal that she is a psychic. Part of the visions she experiences reveal some sort of looming threat that can doom Skyrim’s people. No matter what disposition the player has towards the Jarl, Idgrod will never reveal what this looming threat is. She makes it clear it isn’t the Civil War or the return of dragons, so what could she be referring to? Some theorize it’s visions of the Akavir returning to Tamriel to take over Nirn, but no one knows for sure what this threat is.

8 Is Idgrod Truly A Psychic?

Via: WallpaperUP.com

How can players know for sure that Idgrod is a psychic? None of her visions ever directly manifest in-game, which makes believing her somewhat far-fetched. She does have a tolerance for magic that virtually no Nord has, yet that doesn’t prove her visions to be true. Psychics have existed in previous Elder Scrolls titles, but they usually have predicted something less vague that came to fruition. What’s to say that this psychic power isn’t just an affinity towards Mysticism, a school of magic that was removed from Skyrim entirely?

7 Where Is Idgrod’s Sister?

Via: TheEpicNate315 (YouTube)

Modders that have looked through Skyrim’s Creation Kit might have noticed a cut NPC named Argi Farseer. Judging by her name, she might have been more psychically gifted than Idgrod. There is little to go on with her, as she has no recorded audio, so what exactly was her purpose? Idgrod and her daughter imply through notes that they have a larger family. She was likely cut when Bethesda decided to shorten the main questline for Morthal.

6 Is Lami A Daedra Worshipper?

Via: Steam Community

Lami is the town alchemist for Morthal. Whenever someone needs a remedy or a potion before exploring the Hold’s dangerous marsh, they go to Lami. No one has any problems with her, but it seems that she might be a Daedra worshipper.

If players head to her room on the second floor of her shop, players will notice a few bottles of Skooma next to her bed and, more importantly, two books pertaining to Sheogorath. Skooma is sometimes compared to the mad prince himself, so does that mean Lami is a worshipper of Sheogorath? The NPCs of Morthal seem to have much darker secrets than most townsfolk.

5 What Is “The Incident?”

Via: LoopyNiko (YouTube)

Talking to certain members of the College of Winterhold, mainly Phinis Gestor, will refer to a Morthal “incident.” Some might assume this is referring to the burnt-down house that occurred somewhat recently, but this incident seems to involve Falion, a skilled Conjurer that left the College due to disagreeing with where the College was heading.

With those common theories debunked, what exactly is this “incident?” Could it involve Falion using his Conjuration skills to do something illegal? Is it something unrelated entirely? No one knows, but many theorize that Falion was supposed to have some dark quirk to him before the game released. As it stands, this “incident” remains unexplained.

4 How Does Morthal Maintain Relevancy?

Via: u/Bumblebee__Tuna (Reddit)

Morthal is off of any main roads, is surrounded by marshes and mountains, and has little economic relevancy when compared to the other eight Holds. What exactly keeps Morthal relevant in Skyrim’s landscape? They are known for having a lumber mill, yet Falkreath could outproduce Morthal at a moment’s notice. The only thing Morthal might have going for it is fishing.

It seems that Morthal remains as-is due to the land of Hjaalmarch being the worst terrain in the province that no other Hold wishes to own. Tradition could also have a large part to do with why Morthal still exists. All of that said, there is no telling if Morthal would stay relevant if the Empire win the Civil War and the Aldmeri Dominion decide what to do with the main Holds.

3 How Does The Town Defend Against Attacks?

Via: IGN.com

Guards are a rare sight in Morthal. Since Morthal is a small town in the middle of a marsh, how exactly does it defend itself? For a town that deals with vampires and spirits on a daily basis, it seems strange that so few guards or soldiers, let alone walls and fortifications, can be seen protecting the capital of Hjaalmarch.

2 How Did Idgrod Become Gifted With Pyschic Powers?

Via: WordPress.com

According to the Official Game Guide for Skyrim, Idgrod Ravencore obtained her psychic gift not from birth but from some trip she took when Idgrod was younger. What adventure did Idgrod embark on that gave her this gift? Parts of her family seem to have obtained their psychic powers at birth, but Idgrod had to obtain hers instead. Perhaps the powers awaken in someone after certain events occur? It’s uncertain, but the game makes no mention of this at all.

1 How Does The Court Wizard Know How To Cure Vampirism?

Via: YouTube.com

Falion is the court wizard of Morthal and is a skilled Conjurer. Many fear his abilities and want him cast out from Morthal. That alone may be nothing out of the ordinary for a talented mage, but what is unusual is his ability to cure vampirism.

He does this through a ritual that involves a black soul gem filled with a grand soul. It’s a strange ritual that no other NPC knows how to fulfill in the game, so how exactly did Falion learn of this ritual? No one at the College of Winterhold knows this power nor any other mage in the game. It seems that some of the fears about Falion might be justified. It doesn’t help that Joric and Agni have premonitions about Falion doing something sinister, either.
