Today is a special day in the US, as it is the 25-year anniversary of PlayStation being released in the country. From September 9, 1995 to now, the video game titan has had plenty of ups and downs, gave players some of the best games of the century, and cemented itself as a monument in the gaming industry. Whether gamers are PlayStation fans for life or favor another console, there is no denying what this release did for the gaming world.
The PS5 is releasing in just a few months, and it seems crazy that this console has already gone through four other versions. Whether gamers started with the original PlayStation or just recently jumped on board, it is a powerful adventure that Sony has taken fans on. God of War, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil are just a few of the PlayStation classics that are now staples on most shelves.
One of the key features of PlayStation is exclusivity, and the incredible success of Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Bloodborne on PS4 showcase this perfectly. PlayStation saw a surge in gaming this year as the sequel to one of the most award-winning games of all time was released. While The Last of Us 2 got the controversy it was looking for, it is a perfect example of the type of story that makes players want to jump to PlayStation.
One rumored change that is surprising many players is the possibility of PSP and Vita being compatible with the PS5. The handheld consoles had varied success rates, and neither are seen much today. A new patent shows that they might be used for remote play of some type with the PS5, but no concrete information is out yet.
Along with the massive number of positives PlayStation has, there are still plenty of downs. Although it was one of the most anticipated games of the season, Marvel’s Avengers seems to be having performance issues on PS4 at the moment. It seems strange for a console that takes such pride in its graphics to drop the ball on visuals. Players are also reporting slow loading times, which is one of the biggest issues Borderlands 3 has been facing for the past year.
While Xbox may be the console for hardcore gamers, PlayStation remains the console for storytellers. From deep narratives to incredible worlds, PlayStation users know they are playing something special when they turn their consoles on. Whether gamers want to show their support by buying a 24K gold PS5 or by simply checking out the newest releases, it appears that PlayStation has no need to slow down any time soon. Fans will just have to stay tuned for the next 25 years.
