Following Nvidia’s hugely successful announcement of its GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards, the attention has swiftly turned to AMD and its upcoming reveal of the RDNA2 powered Navi 2X Series, expected to be called the RX 6000 range. As time gets closer to the official announcement date of October 28, the leaks are expected to become more frequent, the latest shows what is rumored to be the first pictures of a working RDNA2 board.
The leak from a user known as Macho on the Chinese site BiliBili shows two images. While the images themselves are of a test board, so not the most exciting to look at, they reveal several details about the AMD Navi 2X card in question. Firstly, though the specific model is not detailed, it is rumored to contain 16 GB of Samsung GDDR6 memory, rather than the HBM2e memory that was previously rumored, with a memory bus of 256-bit, in line with the RTX 3070.
The board is also detailed as XT, which suggests it is the most powerful variant using the full GPU die. It also contains LEDs similar to the GPU Tach that has featured on several previous high-end AMD graphics cards such as the RX Vega 64 and Vega 56. The LEDs show the amount of load that the card is under, providing a handy visual reference without viewing monitoring details on screen.
Although not a final product, the inclusion of 16 GB of memory suggests the test board is for a high end or top end product, a competitor for either the RTX 3090 or more likely the RTX 3080. As the memory chips are single sided, it does leave open the possibility of a 32 GB variant, and the 256-bit bus suggests that a lower priced 8 GB version is a probable option. Despite worries from gamers that the company will struggle to match Nvidia’s RTX 30 Series, AMD’s comments on social media suggest it is confident in its offer.
With efficiency gains of 50% over the first generation RDNA powered cards, along with a more advanced 7 nm production process, RDNA2 certainly has the potential to offer strong performance. While the 256-bit bus and 16 GB GDDR6 memory allocation are unlikely to trouble the RTX 3090, if combined with a powerful and well-designed GPU it could be a real challenger to the RTX 3080 and 3070 for gamers stepping up to 4K resolution, particularly if AMD prices the cards competitively.
AMD has recently reached record share prices, largely through massively increasing its share of the desktop CPU market with the disruptive Zen 2 hardware, if it can successfully follow the same approach with the RX 6000 Series then it may just surprise the skeptics.
