Nintendo has successfully introduced new, strange consoles to players for three generations now. The company’s latest offering, the Nintendo Switch, has become immensely popular. With rumors of a 4K Switch on the horizon, it doesn’t look like the console will be leaving anytime soon, despite a few problems.
The appeal of the Nintendo Switch is twofold. The first is the hardware itself, which has great portability for a major console, as well as innovative control with its modular controllers. The second, arguably more important reason, is its library of impressive games. This includes heavy hitters like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Odyssey, as well also a series of popular indie games.
Despite its many highpoints, the Switch has some undeniable problems as well. The most serious of these is Joy-Con drift, an issue many players continue to deal with. Joy-Cons for the Switch sometimes continuously register movement even while held still, resulting in constant trouble steering characters. In response, one creator in Rivals of Aether decided to represent the problem very literally. Rivals is a lot like Smash Bros, except while games like Bounty Battle copy Smash’s premises, Rivals emulates its gameplay. In Rivals‘ robust character creator, one player created an actual Joy-Con character that constantly moves to the left.
The character is a literal pair of Joy-Cons, red and blue. This doesn’t hinder it though, as the Joy-Cons can jump and spin to fight just as well as any character. However, the character will always drift noticeably to the left, even while standing idle. This obviously makes controlling the Joy-Con a hassle, and serves to illustrate the Joy-Con drift issue in a very easy to see way. Hopefully the new Switch consoles produced during the rest of the year will have less of this issue.
Drift issues are especially bad for games like Rivals, which rely on precise control to perfectly execute moves. The game is a more competitive adaptation of the Smash formula, and has met with wild success. While Smash and Rivals both have their strengths, Rivals definitely has the better character creator. It is currently filled with both original characters and adaptations from other series, including Smash itself.
The Joy-Con is definitely a joke character, but there are Rivals characters made for every purpose. Some are memes, some are jokes, some are entire game modes, but many are straight up attempts at balanced fighters. The Smash character creator (essentially just the Miis) is not nearly so versatile. Still, mods like Pepsiman in Smash at least allow for added fun value in the game.
Rivals of Aether is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
