Ubisoft Reveals New Riders Republic Game for Next-Gen Systems

Ubisoft Forward, Ubisoft’s virtual vehicle for announcing upcoming titles and news, happened today, featuring a good deal of clarification on upcoming titles, like the fact that Watch Dogs Legion will be a Series X launch title, and announcing new games. Some of these are a bit more extreme than others.

Ubisoft announced Riders Republic, a game about the most extreme of extreme sports. Not just one sport either;  it is a simulator for multiple dangerous, thrilling activities. In a similar dangerous sports category, one of the new titles, Roller Champions, is being delayed.

The Riders Republic trailer is extensive, although it is unclear how much of what is being shown is actual gameplay. The trailer depicts a large map (presumably the Republic in question), with player avatars doing various extreme sports at different locations. Biking, skiing, snowboarding, roller-blading, skateboarding, and flying with a jetpack are all represented.

The game may be multiplayer on a very large scale, judging by the number of people in any one course at a time. It’s possible that this will be a multiplayer game intended to hold players like Rainbow Six: Siege. Granted, Ubisoft probably can’t put Sam Fisher in this game like it did Rainbow Six, but there could be other cameos yet to come.

The trailer features many different costumes and loadouts for the various vehicles. No doubt these are unlockable, although many will presumably be purchasable with in-game currency. How much will be purchasable for real-world money is currently unknown, except for the Bunny Pack, which requires a pre-order. There seem to be multiple courses, at least one of which is sponsored by Red Bull. While it’s not explicitly stated that the game will have an in-game store, players should probably look to the return of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World for something without microtransactions.

Ubisoft is not in the best place right now. Accusations of abuse have been widespread throughout the company, and public outcry has not lessened. Ubisoft certainly retains a large player base for its games, and fortunately, these are new titles that may grab the players’ interests.

Regardless, exactly what kind of game Riders Republic is beyond extreme sports remains unknown. Perhaps it will simply be an evolution of the old Trials titles, which it does bear a “next-gen,” overhauled resemblance to.

Riders Republic releases for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One on February 25th, 2021.
