The Division 2 players have anxiously sat back and watched next-gen news coverage over the past several months. New game announcements are understandable a priority right now, but for live service games like The Division 2, there’s nothing more important than whether the game will be supported on the new consoles. Today, Ubisoft put The Division 2 players’ fears to rest. The online multiplayer shooter is confirmed to be playable on both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.
To make clear, Ubisoft explicitly stated that The Division 2 “will be backwards compatible with next-gen consoles.” That doesn’t mean that The Division 2 will be improved for next-gen consoles. It also doesn’t mean that The Division 2 will be ready for next-gen consoles as the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch. The Division 2 may or may not be available for players to play on each console’s launch day.
Ubisoft made the announcement regarding next-gen backward compatibility for The Division 2 as part of today’s Ubisoft Forward presentation. It wasn’t the only announcement made for The Division 2 at the event, though. Also announced was an update named The Summit. The Summit is a new replayable game mode where players take on literal levels of increasing difficulty. A 100-story skyscraper is the setting for The Summit, with each floor offering greater challenges and greater rewards. The new update arrives on September 22.
Needless to say, support for The Division 2 is going to continue into the future. Ubisoft isn’t going to leave it behind with the launch of next-generation consoles. That said, the writing might be on the wall considering Ubisoft hasn’t announced that The Division 2 is going to be upgraded for next-gen consoles yet.
The Division 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X and S support in the future
