Wonder Woman 1984’s Release Date Gets Pushed Back Again

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially pushed back the release date of DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 again. The highly-anticipated sequel to the original Gal Gadot superhero film is now scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25th, 2020.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham, Wonder Woman 1984 will find Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince coming into conflict with Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah during the Cold War. Initially scheduled to hit in theaters in late 2019, Warner Bros. later opted to release Wonder Woman 1984 in on June 5th, 2020, roughly three years after the first film debuted to record-breaking box office success. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent closing of movie theaters prompted the studio to first delay the release of Wonder Woman 1984 until August 2020 and then again to October 2nd of the same year.

Variety reports sources say Warner Bros. was waiting to see how Christopher Nolan’s Tenet fared at the U.S. box office before making a decision about how to proceed with Wonder Woman 1984‘s release. “Patty is an exceptional filmmaker and with Wonder Woman 1984 she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love,” said Toby Emmerich, Warmer Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman in a statement. “We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”

“First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for ‘WW84’ couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie,” said Jenkins. “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!” Jenkins directed both installments of the Wonder Woman film series and plans to end her time with the franchise after the third chapter of the story.

The new Christmas day release date of Wonder Woman 1984 puts the DC film in theaters just one week after Warner Bros.’ remake of Dune. While nothing regarding a change to Dune‘s release date has been announced at this time, the first official trailer for the Denis Villeneuve film curiously came without a release date listed.

While the latest Wonder Woman 1984 delay may be disappointing, it likely comes as no surprise to those who have been watching as the COVID-19 situation fails to improve in the United States. In fact, movie theater owners were reportedly bracing themselves for Wonder Woman 1984 to be delayed yet again due to a combination of theaters in key markets remaining closed and the already existing limits on venue capacity in others.

Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25, 2020.
