The current situation might be preventing the Disneyland Resort in Southern California from opening, but that hasn’t stopped fans from visiting the park in their dreams. Now one group of gamers and creators are helping others visit their favorite rides from Disneyland, only in the game Dreams from developer Media Molecule.
Eventually, Hakke adds a link to their creations for Dreams players to download, but right now it’s just a YouTube video showing how the whole experience (or rather, multiple experiences stitched together) works.
The Haunted Mansion Dreams recreation includes the exterior of the mansion, the short waiting area, the stretching elevator, the queue to get on the ride, and then the ride itself. It’s an extremely comprehensive recreation of the Haunted Mansion ride, complete with all of its sound effects (presumably ripped from a live video).
Obviously the limitations of Dreams prevent Hakke from being able to fully recreate the Haunted Mansion, but what is there is extremely impressive. Regularly Disneyland visitors will notice a lot of important details from the queue and the ride, like the statues that appear to “follow” the guest as they move and the hitchhiking ghosts from the ride’s conclusion.
Haunted Mansion might not be the most famous or iconic of the Disneyland attractions, but it still has a dedicated fan base. The ride was built back in 1969 and was Walt Disney’s idea of a haunted house within Disneyland. And while many rides typically debut at DisneyWorld and then matriculate to the other Disney parks, Haunted Mansion got its start at Disneyland.
Everything that Hakke has been able to do in Dreams thus far is extremely impressive. Of course, the use of real audio goes a long way towards recreating the “feel” of the Disney attraction, but even then there is so much detail and care put into the designs. They are clearly someone who knows Disneyland well and knows what elements from each ride stand out to regulars. Even something as simple as the pathways through Space Mountain’s queue are faithfully recreated to get as close to the real thing as possible. Needless, to say Disney fans can’t wait to see what ride Hakke recreates next. Thus far, there has been about a month of design time for each Dreams ride.
Dreams is available now for PS4.
