Xbox Celebrates National Video Games Day With Tweet Promoting PS5, Switch, and PC Gaming

The official Xbox Twitter account celebrated National Video Games Day by tweeting a graphic recognizing that fans of the Xbox, PC, Switch, or Playstation all share a love for gaming. This represents an unusual post for Xbox, which has recently been focused on promoting the upcoming Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

National Video Games Day became a prominent yearly event on September 12 starting in the 2010s, marked by all kinds of sales and events. Gaming companies typically celebrate National Video Games Day with tributes to the love of gaming, and the latest Xbox tweet is no exception. Amusingly, National Video Games Day is separate from National Video Game Day on July 8th.

The tweeted graphic depicts a Venn diagram with PC and next-gen Xbox consoles on one side, and the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 on the other. The two circles overlap in the middle with the phrase “loving video games,” symbolizing the gaming community’s shared passion for gaming. Notably, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S both appear in the image. This suggests that Xbox is equally committed to both products, even as some express concerns about the lower specs of the Xbox Series S.

This isn’t the only recent instance in which Xbox gave a nod to rival consoles. Microsoft has allowed several major Xbox console exclusives to migrate to other consoles, like beloved 2D run-and-gun title Cuphead. Given that the formerly-PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn recently migrated to PC, both Microsoft and Sony have shown some willingness to support the other. Of course, it’s no surprise that Xbox would warmly acknowledge PC gaming, as Microsoft brings many exclusive games to both PCs and its Xbox consoles.

Some may argue that the image still finds ways to favor the upcoming Xbox consoles over Sony’s offerings. For example, the image includes both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, but only one version of the PlayStation 5. Given that a special digital edition of the PlayStation 5 is releasing alongside the standard version, fans may be a little irritated that both consoles variants don’t appear in the image.

Still, it’s great to see one of the gaming industry’s titans recognize its shared interests with its rivals. Only time will tell whether Microsoft or Sony will outsell the other with the launch of their new respective consoles, but either way, the future of gaming will be more exciting than ever before.
