PlayStation fans have been waiting patiently for Sony to announce the PlayStation 5 price and release date, but there haven’t been any major updates since the console’s “Future of Gaming” showcase back in June. Now, after Microsoft has already revealed everything there is to know about the Xbox Series X and Series S, Sony has finally revealed when fans can expect more PS5 news.
As revealed by Sony, the next PS5 Showcase event will happen on Wednesday, September 16 at 1:00pm PT. The event will be about 40 minutes long, and give PlayStation fans a new look at upcoming PS5 games. However, it’s quite likely that Sony will have much more to share about the PS5 at the show.
Some may recall that the PS5 console design was revealed at the end of the last PS5 Showcase, and it seems quite likely that the company has some big surprises up its sleeve for the next event. Here is everything that PlayStation fans can expect from the PS5 Showcase that is set to take place later this week.
Besides the fact that the PS5 Showcase event will take place on Wednesday, September 16 at 1:00pm PT, the only other detail Sony has confirmed is that the event will feature some of the new console’s launch titles. Whether or not the entire slate of PS5 launch titles is revealed or not remains to be seen, but fans should get a much better idea of at least some of the games they will be able to play on their PS5 at launch. Based on the Xbox Series X launch titles, fans can expect the bulk of the PS5 launch games to be multi-platform, cross-generational releases.
But the PS5 will also have some first-party exclusives available for the console at launch as well. This includes Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games, as well as Astro’s Playroom, with the latter coming pre-installed on all PS5 consoles. Rumors have indicated that the ambitious Demon’s Souls remake from Bluepoint may also wind up being a PS5 launch title, and while that has yet to be confirmed, fans will likely find out one way or another come the PS5 Showcase on September 16.
Launch titles will definitely be getting the bulk of the attention during the PS5 Showcase, but titles coming in 2021 may also get some love. This would potentially include games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Third-party 2021 and beyond games may also be showcased, with rumors pointing to blockbuster announcements like Battlefield 6 and Final Fantasy 16. Needless to say, Sony enthusiasts should have a lot to look forward to during the PS5 Showcase event.
Games are likely going to be the main focus of the PS5 Showcase, but fans may also finally learn the PS5 price and release date. Microsoft beat Sony to the punch by announcing the Xbox Series X price of $499 and its November 10 release date, and that combined with the cheap $299 Xbox Series S console has reportedly changed the plans for the PS5. According to some unverified reports, the PS5 price was slashed in response to Microsoft’s announcements, so now the standard PS5 will supposedly match the Xbox Series X price of $499, with the Digital Edition of the console reportedly retailing for $399.
As for when the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition will be available, that has yet to be determined. Most rumors and leaks point to the PS5 release date being either November 17 or November 20, and both of those dates make a lot of sense. After all, the PS5 is expected to launch after the Xbox Series X, and not only that, but those dates would allow Sony to get the new system launched before the Thanksgiving holiday and the Christmas shopping season.
After learning the PS5 price and release date, the next thing consumers will want to know is when they can pre-order the console. Sony has said in the past that it will give fans advanced notice as to when they will be able to pre-order the PS5, and it will definitely be interesting to see if it tries to get ahead of Microsoft’s September 22nd date for Xbox Series X pre-orders. Rumors say that the PS5 pre-orders may be sooner than expected, so it’s possible they will even go live later in the week. However, that’s just speculation at this time, and fans should be sure to tune in to the PS5 Showcase event on September 16 to find out more.
One of the biggest PS5 rumors these past few months has claimed that Sony and Konami have secretly been collaborating on a Silent Hill PS5 exclusive game. This information has come from leakers who have been proven reliable in the past, and those same leakers were surprised when the Silent Hill PS5 game wasn’t announced at Sony’s initial PS5 event back in June. Speculation points to the Silent Hill PS5 game skipping the event so Sony could show off Resident Evil 8 instead, but with RE8‘s next update coming at the Tokyo Game Show, it leaves some room for Silent Hill to make its debut.
Considering the franchise’s recent history, a Silent Hill PS5 exclusive announcement would be huge and generate even more attention for the PS5. Whether or not there’s any truth to the rumors is up for debate, but Silent Hill and horror fans should tune in on September 16 at 1:00pm PT just in case.
