Disney+ Picks Up Doogie Howser Reboot | Game Rant

It’s been quite a while since the world heard anything from Doogie Howser. In fact, over 23 years have passed since the original show ended, and its young star, Neil Patrick Harris has gotten even more famous in the meantime. Though audiences have likely not thought about Doogie Howser, M.D. for quite a while, it seems Disney has kept a close eye on the property. As Variety confirms, Disney+ has officially picked up a reboot series, which will be titled Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.

The premise of the show is quite similar to the original, with Lahela “Doogie” Kameāloha being a mixed race 16 year old girl whose incredible talents have landed her a job working as a doctor in Hawaii. Much like the first version, the reboot will focus on Lahela attempting to balance her medical responsibilities with her teenage life, taking on both the difficulties of being a doctor and the struggles of growing up. And, presumably, why she has the nickname “Doogie.” The original character’s given name was “Douglas,” which became Doogie. “Lahela” doesn’t make the transition quite as easily.

It is still unclear whether or not the show is an actual continuation, or straight reboot of the original property. While it is clearly taking a massive amount of inspiration from the original, there has been no direct mention of whether or not Neil Patrick Harris has been approached for any involvement, or if the show even takes place in the same continuity as the original. In interviews, contributors have been excited to emphasize the reinvention of the character, perhaps indicating a complete ground-up reboot.  Carolyn Cassidy, president of 20th Television, which is producing the show said of the project: “Kourtney [Kang]’s vision for the character is so inspired… and Disney+ is exactly the right home for this idea. We couldn’t be more excited.”

There is already a lot of talent gathering behind the scenes on this project. Kourtney Kang is perhaps best known as one of the producers on Fresh Off the Boat, and the project has also hired Dayna and Jesse Bochco, the wife and son of the original show’s co-creator. With any luck, the project will be able to blend its modern interpretation with an appreciation for the original source material. As part of the announcement, Ricky Strauss of Disney+ declared: “Kourtney and the team at 20th Television have created a very modern take on this beloved property which will resonate with our global Disney+ audience. We can’t wait to introduce the world to the new Doogie!”

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. will be available on Disney+ when it eventually releases.
