Gotham Knights Shipping With ‘Big Range’ of Character Skins

Announced at last month’s DC FanDome, Gotham Knights looks to be the next big DC game on the horizon, featuring the Bat-Family in a world following the death of the Caped Crusader. It’ll be tackled by WB Montreal, the team behind Batman Arkham Origins, and feature online co-op with players teaming up to fight against the Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and other villains currently terrorizing Gotham’s streets.

One thing fans don’t know much about is the game’s confirmed cosmetics, with players wondering whether they’re unlocked through loot, bought with in-game currency, or purchased through DLC. Speaking to Comicbook.com, WB Montreal was quite open about how these elements will work, highlighting the plans for various costumes and skins during the launch of Gotham Knights.

“I know it’s weird to hear this because it seems unusual at this point, but we are shipping the game with a lot of that content,” says Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding. “We really are focused so much on the game that people will buy and making sure that it gives them a big range in terms of looks, in terms of abilities, in terms of character opportunities.” The message seems quite clear. Gotham Knights will offer a lot of quality content for players on day one, meaning those who buy the game won’t be missing out if they don’t fork over extra cash for additional content. If the words of Redding weren’t enough, he also went on to hammer home that character skins are “not something that’s only going to be available to people on DLC.”

Naturally, it’s interesting to see where Redding and WB Montreal stands on the DLC debate, especially with many making accusations that Gotham Knights is trending down the same live-service path as Marvel’s AvengersThe latter has garnered backlash for its approach to microtransactions, with some reviewers stating that skins seem to encourage spending real-world money to avoid grinding out illusive in-game currency. Hopefully, Redding’s words will put to bed at least some of the concerns fans have towards the upcoming action title.

Alongside Gotham Knights, Rocksteady will also be releasing a multiplayer game in the next few years, with the company working on a 4-player Suicide Squad title meant to release in 2022. While it’s far off, the game will allegedly continue the story of Arkham Knight, seeing Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang attempt to kill the Justice League. It’ll no doubt be curious to see how it compares to WB Montreal’s 2021 DC offering.

Gotham Knights will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in 2021.
