September 2020 has seen the release of a few critically-acclaimed titles, including Paradox Development Studio’s strategy game Crusader Kings 3 and Vicarious Visions’ extreme sports game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remake. With more big titles like the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection releasing later this month, some players may be wondering how they can get the most out of all these experiences in the shortest amount of time. Luckily, modder Voffvoffhunden has a potential solution.
Voffvoffhunden uploaded a mod to Steam Workshop today called “Tony Hawk’s Pro Crusaders 1 + 2” that offers Crusader Kings 3 users the opportunity to let their lords and ladies take to skateparks in the Middle Ages for some anachronistic fun. They say the idea came about because their friend couldn’t decide whether to play Tony Hawk or Crusader Kings 3, so the “comprehensive skating mod” is meant to be something of a compromise.
This mod adds some significant content to the strategy game, which has received numerous other player-driven additions since launch, including a mod to turn Crusader Kings 3 characters into nudists. A new lifestyle skill called Skater can be accessed and leveled up by sending characters to skateparks — which helps relieve stress. There are also “about two dozen new skating events,” and, most importantly, infamous Mongol leader Genghis Khan always spawns as a Skate Legend who will never attack other skaters.
Clearly Voffvoffhunden has a good sense of humor given screenshots on Steam showing quests with characters breaking truces by starting skate challenges rather than conquering one another by declaring war. One commenter asks whether they will add “skatrilineal succession” so a nation’s best skater can ascend to the throne, and Voffvoffhunder said they will take it into consideration to avoid a “massive oversight” in their historical mod.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is not the only game that has been mixed with Crusader Kings 3 thanks to its modding community. One particularly in-depth mod is inspired by Vampire: The Masquerade, and has received praise from both Paradox and White Wolf.
As much as Crusader Kings 3 can be augmented through mods, which should give it longevity amongst its fans, there are also a lot of strange and crazy things players can do in the base game. For instance, one Crusader Kings 3 player went out of their way to eat the Catholic Pope through an involved side-quest to conquer holy sites and activate an ability called “Ritual Cannibalism.”
Crusader Kings 3 is available now on PC.
