Facebook’s Oculus Quest headset has proven to be one of the most popular virtual reality headsets on the market, thanks to its wires-free approach to VR. Back in July, the existence of an Oculus Quest 2 headset leaked online, and while an official announcement still has yet to be made, a newly leaked trailer has revealed pretty much everything fans need to know about the new hardware.
According to the trailer, the Oculus Quest 2 is smaller than the original Oculus Quest, which will allow for increased user comfort. Not only that, but the Oculus Quest 2 has an improved strap to allow users to more easily put the headset on. The controllers have also been tweaked to be more ergonomic. Internally, the Oculus Quest 2 boasts 50 percent more pixels than the original headset, making it the highest resolution headset that the company has produced to date.
The Oculus Quest 2 headset has 6 GB RAM and up to 256 GB storage. And like the original Oculus Quest, the Oculus Quest 2 supports the Oculus Link feature, which allows users to connect their headset to a VR-ready PC to play more advanced games. Some titles that were specifically mentioned in the trailer include critically-acclaimed VR games like Asgard’s Wrath and Stormland.
The only details that have yet to be revealed about the Oculus Quest 2 are its price and release date. However, it’s quite likely that the Oculus Quest 2 will be somewhere between $399-$499, which would be in line with the price of the original Quest model. One might think that the Oculus Quest 2 would be more expensive, but that seems unlikely as it looks as though the headset is going to be outright replacing the original Quest headset.
Facebook has seemingly discontinued the original Oculus Quest, which is a strong indication that it plans on replacing the headset with the Quest 2 entirely. Consumers will stop seeing Oculus Quest headsets on store shelves at all, with just Oculus Quest 2 models in stock. This should ensure that anyone buying a Quest for the first time ends up with the superior version and doesn’t accidentally purchase the weaker, older version instead.
As for when the official Oculus Quest 2 announcement will come, that remains to be seen. However, a previous Oculus Quest 2 leak has suggested that the announcement will take place on Tuesday, September 15. With the trailer and other information on the Oculus Quest 2 leaking online on September 14, it does seem as though the September 15 reveal date is highly likely. Then again, it could be announced during the Facebook Connect presentation that’s scheduled to take place on September 16 instead.
