PS5 Gets Strange ‘Play Has No Limits’ Commercial | Game Rant

2020 has been an incredibly rough and strange year to launch new consoles such as the PlayStation 5. Despite that, Sony has been gearing up to release the console soon, with an odd new trailer being released to build hype for Wednesday’s upcoming PS5 info dump.

The PlayStation 5 showcase on September 16th is likely to hold info on the console’s release date, price, and launch lineup. This “Play Has No Limits” teaser has none of that. PlayStation has released many odd trailers in the past to promote its consoles, usually set around some random people entering a world full of PlayStation characters and easter eggs. This teaser follows in that same path, though whatever easter eggs there are remain well-hidden.

The trailer sees a man in a boat encountering a classic, PlayStation blue glow behind a massive wave. The wave lets out a pulse that changes the surroundings of the man and brings in hundreds of ships and planes from around the world. Everyone seems determined to charge through the wave together and see what lies on the other side, with the original man leading the charge. Perhaps this is an over-the-top metaphor for the leaked feature where players may be able to share saves on PS5, as the trailer is incredibly strange.

What lies on the other side of the wave is not a look inside the PS5 box and what comes with the console, as the adventurers find nothing but darkness. The empty, space-like void implies they have just gone beyond the edge of the world, an odd concept for a trailer meant to be showing off a console. If someone did not know Sony was known for this kind of console marketing, they would likely be very confused by the commercial and what it is meant to be advertising.

Fans did not take long to start searching for game references and clues, however, as this trailer had far less of a connection to PlayStation 5’s features than the previous live action PS5 trailer. While it is still early and there are likely many secrets fans will still uncover, one of the biggest has already been found. Commenter SweetnessGaming points out that if fans look at the inner left ship at around 47 seconds into the trailer, they can see the logo for the SOCOM series. Sure enough, the logo does seem to be there, and this should be a wildly exciting tease for those still holding out hope for a reboot.

Odd commercial aside, fans should be only days away from learning whether the leaked release date for the PS5 console is true. Until then, maybe more teases like the SOCOM logo will be found in the “Play Has No Limits” ad.
