How Much The Marvel’s Avengers Characters Have Changed Since Reveal

Earlier this month, Crystal Dynamics finally released Marvel’s Avengers, which is a third-person action-adventure title that can be played both in single and multiplayer. Shortly after its release, Avengers received mostly positive, somewhat mixed reviews from both players and critics, but it is worth remembering that the game’s reception hasn’t always been positive.

During its world premiere at E3 2019, the game received some backlash revolving around the design of some of its characters. Of course, given that comic and film franchises have since established a certain look for each of the characters, it is understandable that some players weren’t happy with the choices of Crystal Dynamics when it came to the appearances of its most prominent heroes. Although Crystal Dynamics did say in the past that it won’t be changing the designs of the protagonists in Marvel’s Avengers, some characters obviously looked different in the premiere trailer compared to their final builds.

One of the characters that received the most drastic of changes is Thor. During the world premiere of the game, Thor sported messy hair and a longer beard. However, in the final version of the game, players will notice that his messy hair is now tied back in a half-updo, his beard appears to have been trimmed slightly, and his overall facial structure appears to have been changed in favor of a more chiseled and younger look.

Another character that received the most flak during the debut trailer of the game is Black Widow. As compared to her original look, Black Widow now appears to have more detailed facial features, slightly longer hair, and similar to Thor, her redesigned appearances make her look a little bit younger than the original design in the trailer.

In Marvel’s Avengers, Iron Man’s suit remains untouched apart from a few improvements to its texture giving it a more matte look than the original. On the other hand, the design of Tony Stark’s appearance himself appears to have been changed, but only slightly. In the actual game, Tony Stark appears younger than his initial design shown in the debut trailer, his face is slightly shorter, and his jawline is much more prominent in the final build. Despite that, Tony Stark’s hair and beard remain unchanged.

Similar to Iron Man, Captain America’s suit does not appear to have changed since the initial reveal. However, it appears that Crystal Dynamics may have altered Steve Rodgers’ appearance a bit, making him look a little bit younger than his design in the premiere trailer. However, it is worth noting that unlike Thor and Black Widow, Captain America doesn’t really have any significant changes in his design, and some differences, if there are any, are probably due to different angles, lighting, and image quality.

Lastly, The Hulk’s appearance went mostly unchanged, especially in his mutant form. Although images of him from the trailer and the final game build put side-by-side may reveal very minor differences, most of which are probably texture improvements to make him more realistic and details. The same can be said to his Bruce Banner form, which remains untouched apart from a few texture changes here and there.

Overall, it appears that significant changes were mostly introduced to Thor and Black Widow, which is understandable given that most of the criticisms from fans early on were targeted to those two characters. In the end, Marvel’s Avengers is proving to be a somewhat popular game among fans of the Marvel franchise, and by making these characters appear younger with stronger touches, it’s clear that making these edits was a good choice.

Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
