Crystal Dynamics’ newest game, the live service Marvel’s Avengers, is officially out and in players’ hands. Already players are clearing the game quickly and diving into post-game content. Crystal Dynamics is investigating some bugs, and it’s undeniable the game has a few problems. Some of them are more hilarious than others. Please note that this article will have SPOILERS for Marvel’s Avengers.
The general consensus for Marvel’s Avengers is that, while the core gameplay is fun, the game suffers in other areas. The live service aspects hold the game back from what could otherwise be a fully enjoyable experience. While the story is a good way to bring the Avengers together, and probably several players’ introduction to Kamala Kahn, other aspects don’t hold up so well. Sometimes this is part of the core game, like the underwhelming loot collection, other times its a simple flub in a cutscene that shows a lack of polish.
It’s the second problem that has come to light recently, as pointed out by Greg Miller on Twitter. There’s a mistake during the ending cutscene of the game’s story. After the player has defeated the final boss and brought the Avengers back together to protect the world again, they all come together for one last detail. In the scene, the team gathers to officially make Ms. Marvel (Kamala) an Avenger. It’s a touching and uplifting moment that, in the video shared, is somewhat undercut by a second Captain America in the background. As the camera pans over during Cap’s speech, it shows a second Captain America nervously fidgeting behind the rest of the team. This makes the second Captain America glitch found in Marvel’s Avengers, although this one is somewhat less scary.
Considering the fact that Miller’s Tweet has the PlayStation Network label, there’s a good chance this came from the PlayStation version of Marvel’s Avengers and not the messy PC version. The reason for the flub is pretty obvious. Immediately after the cutscene, the camera switches to Captain America standing where the second Cap showed up during the cutscene, giving control back to the player. It seems the game loaded the Cap the player controls just a little bit early. This is backed up by a reply tweet saying the same thing happened to them, but with Black Widow. Looks like whoever the player is piloting at the time gets doubled in the cutscene because of this.
It’s a shame too, because the cutscene is meant to be the emotional climax of the game. Kamala Kahn is arguably the game’s main character, and this is her big moment, where she fully joins her heroes. But when players are questioning if Loki is shapeshifting in the background, it’s a little hard to take the moment seriously.
Hopefully this will get a fix, even though it is a small issue. Obviously fixes or answers about Avengers‘ possibly nerfed loot would be preferred over something this small, but it would still be a worthwhile endeavor.
Marvel’s Avengers is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
