Fans of Undertale and Deltarune had good reason to be excited this week. An update on the progress of Deltarune was promised, and, almost a week later, delivered. After a long period of radio silence, there’s finally some big news on Toby Fox’s current project.
Undertale has become known throughout the video game scene and beyond. Created by a small team headed by Toby Fox (who did a huge chunk of the work himself), Undertale was generally well-received. Its best qualities were passed along to the sequel, Deltarune. Deltarune‘s first chapter was released for free in 2018, and now more news has surfaced about the progression of further chapters.
Earlier this week, new screenshots from Deltarune were revealed, but the best was yet to come. In an extensive update, Toby Fox laid out the progress of Chapter 2, and of the game as a whole. Surprisingly, a good portion of development was devoted to finding a new vehicle for the game before ultimately returning to GameMaker. Fox said that he did not regret the time spent, nor returning to the original design platform, as it gave him time to perfect the story and add new ideas to the game. Indeed, despite settling back where they started, the team has completed around 80% of Chapter 2, leaving only finishing touches like bugfixing and balancing as the last major steps.
All of this is a lot more information than any previous update, the largest of which consisted of tweets from Fox about two new songs in Deltarune. The other chapters have mostly been fleshed out conceptually, according to Fox’s estimate. That said, the spritework for these chapters is only about 20% done, since most resources are presumably still focused on Chapter 2. Fox thinks Chapter 2 will release before the end of the year.
Fox expressed his dedication to everyone who has stuck with him and his team across the development of both games. Fox said he wished he could work even more than he already is, but is held back by wrist and hand medical issues.
All of this led to a surprising announcement at the end of the news: Fox is looking for people to join his development team. He has stated that a small number of additional people would help things run smoothly. The positions he is looking for and the specific qualities he needs from people are available at the Undertale website and the link to the source of this article. Considering the fact that Undertale was one of the most downloaded Switch games four years after its release and the loyal fanbase the games have, it’s likely he will receive a lot of applications.
Deltarune is available for PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
