Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Bullet Penetration is Class-Based

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is changing up the CoD formula in more ways than one, with some changes being lauded by most fans and others being met with disappointment by just as many. The newest Black Ops Cold War change was announced by Treyarch developer Tony Flame and is likely to be met with positive reception, however, as it does away with one of the more confusing CoD attachments.

While Black Ops Cold War will supposedly be bringing back many old scorestreaks from previous games, its weapon attachments will not all be the same. The removal of FMJ, as discussed by Flame, is a clear example of this. The change makes sense for many reasons, but the simplest of them is that many fans misunderstood the perk. While it said it added to the damage stat of the weapon for years in various CoD games, FMJ only ever allowed for greater penetration through walls and armor.

Aside from a general state of confusion among a portion of the audience, Flame discussed other reasons for taking away FMJ from Black Ops Cold War in the same way that Treyarch is removing the aiming penalty from flinch. Quite simply, the team found the attachment “inconsistent” in doing the job that it was meant to do. Further, those being shot through surfaces by FMJ weapons had no idea they were getting into a shootout with someone that had increased bullet penetration. To address this, Black Ops Cold War will have a simplified system that is clear to all players.

Flame clarifies that the new system is “solely class-based,” meaning that players can make use of Create A Class and the returning Gunsmith feature to choose a weapon from a category that features higher bullet penetration. Flame shares the example that “LMG’s have more penetration than AR’s which have more penetration than SMG’s,” and his brief statement covers exactly how the system will function. From now on, when players see an SMG, they will know they’ll be safe behind cover. When they see an LMG, however, it is going to be a good idea to start running.

This system could further explain Treyarch’s recent defense of the game’s tanks, which players have been quick to call out as overpowered. A developer from the team stated that players could easily spec out their weapons to be anti-vehicle, and the increased penetration on LMGs should help with vehicle destruction. How fans take to the new bullet penetration system remains to be seen, though early reactions to the Twitter post from Flame seem positive.

Fans will get an idea of how bullet penetration and the other new systems for Black Ops Cold War work in just a few short weeks. The Black Ops Cold War beta begins October 8th, and it is likely to feature weaponry from every class so players can get an idea of how differently each weapon type feels now.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be available on November 13th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades will also be available.
