After a recent spike in popularity, Among Us has been the talk of the gaming scene, and many seem to be enjoying the deception-based game. Any title with that kind of popularity will inevitably to be subjected to memes and other edits, which has resulted in a hilarious crossover between Among Us and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Twitter user CzarDB shared an edit that applies the gameplay of Among Us to Animal Crossing: New Horizons characters. In the video, the Villager stumbles upon Gulliver after he has washed up on the beach, leading them to report that they found a dead body. This prompts the discussion portion of Among Us, and leads the different Animal Crossing characters to accuse each other in their unmistakeable, high-pitch noises.
Among Us released over two years ago on PC and mobile devices, but in the last few weeks several high-profile Twitch streamers including Ninja and other YouTubers have been playing the game, leading to an explosion in popularity. Among Us is very similar to Werewolf or Mafia-type games, where players are assigned one of two roles, imposter or not the imposter. Imposters look like normal players, however, and they must eliminate other players in the game while deceiving their crewmates to avoid being outed.
After finding bodies and calling for meetings, players discuss and accuse each other over suspicious activity and can vote to remove a player from the game if they’re suspected as an imposter. It makes sense to create a crossover featuring two of 2020’s most popular titles, even if Among Us didn’t release this year. As popular as Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been since it first released back in March, Among Us has undoubtedly taken its place as a social media content craze in the current moment.
At the time of writing, Among Us is the most-watched game on Twitch with over 200,000 viewers and one million followers. Developer InnerSloth mentioned in a tweet that Among Us has reached 1.5 million simultaneous players, something the team never anticipated.
After this unexpected spike in popularity, InnerSloth announced that development on Among Us 2 has officially started. Mentioned in a blog post, the development team says that the next game will support 12 to 15 players and include new roles for players, new maps, and new game modes for players to try.
Among Us is available for Mobile and PC.
