The Definitive Edition of Dan Fornace’s 2017 indie fighting game Rivals of Aether will soon be releasing on the eShop for Nintendo Switch. While previously only expected sometime this month, a Twitter post has revealed that the game will launch for the console on September 24.
For those who prefer to play their games on PC, the Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition will also be released on Steam the same day as the Nintendo Switch version. The Definitive Edition will unlock all character, stages and modes in the game, giving players access to the its original characters as well as those added in DLC.
Furthermore, online functionality in the game has been expanded, increasing the number of players that can battle online from two to four. The Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition will introduce 2v2 and Free-for-All matches to online play, and there will now be online support for Abyss Versus and Abyss Endless.
A new sports battle mode will let players test their skills with different characters by competing in a best-of-three tetherball match. This mode was originally created as an April Fool’s joke that transformed the entire game, dubbed “Rivals of Tether,” but it was later confirmed to be a real game mode coming in the Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition.
The Definitive Edition will also add a new Milestone system that keeps track of players’ kill counts and their number of deaths. When a player reaches 250 kills with a specific character, they will unlock a cosmetic reward for that character.
Rivals of Aether Definitive Edition will release on PC and Switch September 24, 2020.
