Nintendo Will Extend Switch’s Life Cycle With New Games

The Nintendo Switch has been a massive success for Nintendo, though many fans have wondered how much longer the system will be supported. According to Nintendo’s plans for new exclusive games, however, the Switch platform will be viable for years to come.

With the incredibly high sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons extending to Switch console sales, the continues support of the Switch is unsurprising. Further helped by a 2017 release, directly in the middle of the PS4/Xbox One generation, the Switch is only about halfway through its own life cycle. In an online briefing earlier today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa promised plenty more game releases for the Switch over the next few years.

While specific games were not listed, dedicated Switch fans should have an idea of what games will be coming. Bayonetta 3 is a perfect fit for one of those upcoming games referred to by Furukawa, as almost nothing has been said about the game since it was revealed years ago. When Bayonetta 3 is shown again is anyone’s guess, as the COVID-19 outbreak likely pushed back Platinum Games’ plans to show off more of the project. Still, Platinum Games developers are working on the game from home and have ensured fans that Bayonetta 3 development is “going fine.”

Metroid Prime 4 is another Nintendo exclusive that will likely fit into the “many games” comment from the Nintendo president, as the game became trapped in development hell and was restarted from scratch over a year ago. Developer Retro Studios recently hired a Modern Warfare developer to help get the game on track, though with how messy the game’s development has been, there is no telling when it will release. At this rate, Metroid Prime 4 coming out at the very end of the Switch’s life cycle seems likely.

Other Switch exclusive games that are known about include the guaranteed sales success The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, though a producer for the game recently said that no info on the sequel will be shared anytime soon. Regardless of when it releases, though, the game will undoubtedly bring new life (and new console buyers) to the Switch platform. There are likely some big unknown Switch games still on the way, too, ensuring that the Nintendo Switch will be getting new software for at least a few more years.

New Pokemon Snap rounds out the list of currently announced Switch games on the way, and it will likely be the next big Switch exclusive released. With numerous games in development, fans do not need to worry about getting another Nintendo console any time soon.
