Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell Games Announced for Oculus Quest 2

Fans have been hoping for a new Splinter Cell game for years now, but they may have just walked themselves into a monkey’s paw situation. At today’s Facebook Connect presentation, Ubisoft announced new Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed games, both of which are VR titles made exclusively for the Oculus platform.

The Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games will be developed by Ubisoft Red Storm, who is best known for working on Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy games, with support from Ubisoft Reflections, Dusseldorf, and Mumbai studios. Not many details were offered during the Facebook Connect presentation, although Ubisoft commented that both games are being made from the ground up for VR and will be exclusive to Oculus platforms, including the newly announced Oculus Quest 2.

Rumors of these two Ubisoft VR games began last year and started to pick up steam this week. While this kind of Splinter Cell game may not be what fans of the franchise wanted, it is something and as long as Splinter Cell games are in development, it should be seen as a positive. It will be interesting to see how Ubisoft approaches the VR titles as both series are known for stealth action and precise player location. Plus, hanging upside down as Sam Fisher or jumping off a building into a haystack as an assassin may make some players pretty sick.

While Assassin’s Creed fans are in a much happier state, as their franchise of choice is continuing to get new games, Splinter Cell fans are not as lucky. Recently, Sam Fisher was added to Rainbow Six Siege as a playable operator, which disappointed fans who are eagerly waiting for a new Splinter Cell game. Before the Rainbow Six addition, Fisher was announced as a character in Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad, a mobile game, and before that he was added in a DLC mission for Ghost Recon Wildlands. The Sam Fisher appearances in other games seem to be a giant tease to Splinter Cell fans at this point.

Oculus made other big announcements during the Facebook Connect presentation. The company officially announced its next VR headset, the Oculus Quest 2, which is sure to be the next popular VR entry point for many. The Oculus Quest 2 is, as expected, more powerful than its predecessor and comes in at a friendly price of $299. The all-in-one Oculus Quest 2 is sure to be a very popular item this fall, especially considering it’s one of the only platforms where fans can play the new Splinter Cell game.
