One of the perks of playing games on PC is the fact that very often there are mods to make the experience more pleasant, whether that be through graphical improvements, tweaks to gameplay, or even the addition of characters from other franchises. Accordingly, a modder for the recently released Souls-like title Mortal Shell decided to add iconic Final Fantasy 7 character Cloud Strife into the game.
One of the features that make Cold Symmetry’s action role-playing game slightly different from the Dark Souls games is the ability for players to change Shells in Mortal Shell to gain new combat styles and abilities. Rather than reallocate skill points or swap out gear to change a character’s play style, players can simply remove one Shell and don another.
By creating the Medieval Marine First Shell for Mortal Shell, a modder at Nexus Mods named Beyonders has given players the chance to play through the game as one of the Final Fantasy franchise’s most well-known protagonists. Although the mod is still in the beta phase, it successfully adds the Final Fantasy 7 Remake version of Cloud Strife into Mortal Shell and replaces both the sword and long sword in the game with Cloud’s infamous Buster Sword.
Beyonders’ Medieval Marine First Shell is one of the first purely cosmetic mods released for Mortal Shell on PC thus far. Despite being released a month ago and receiving somewhat positive reviews overall, not many mods have been created yet for the title. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Mortal Shell released as an Epic Games Store exclusive and will be constrained to that storefront for a year before debuting on Steam, which is still the online store of choice for many PC gamers.
Mortal Shell, already known for its brutal difficulty that is sure to satisfy the itch for fans of FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls series, tests players’ fighting skills on a desolate and shattered world filled with relentless and powerful enemies. Gamers must track down and awaken the Mortal Shells scattered throughout the ruins of this torn land, unlocking and mastering the unique combat skills that they bestow.
The game has enjoyed generally positive reception from critics, with players being a bit less free with their praise. Reviews for Mortal Shell have been generous with pointing out both the pros and cons of Cold Symmetry’s Souls-like title. Negatives include the game’s slow pace, which seems only emphasized when compared to the speed of games like Bloodborne and Sekiro, as well as the blandness and sometimes confusing layout of its dark fantasy environment. Others tout the versatility of Mortal Shell’s unique Shell mechanic that can completely alter the feeling of combat in the game.
Mortal Shell is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
