There have been leaks and rumors of a Nintendo Switch exclusive Monster Hunter game over the last few days, but fans finally got an official announcement today for a game called Monster Hunter Rise, as part of Nintendo’s latest Partner Showcase.
Though Capcom only shared a short trailer and brief overview via a separate Monster Hunter Rise Direct, it’s plain to see that it’s the Monster Hunter many fans know and love, with features one may recognize from Monster Hunter World and some new additions of its own. Least of all, there are new monsters of all shapes and sizes for players to track down and battle.
Fans got snippets of some of the new beasts in the announcement trailer, but series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto went into a little more detail on them in the Monster Hunter Rise Direct. Firstly, there’s Magnamolo, the Fanged Wyvern which is being billed as the flagship monster of the game. It’s mostly kept in shadows, with only an eerie purple light emanating from it giving away what it looks like. In the trailer, it kills another monster using its tail, which could possibly function like a whip of some kind.
Next is a Bird Wyvern called Aknosom, whose most discerning characteristic is the giant crest on its head. It can change the crest’s shape, either using it as a lance to ram into players or expanding it into a fan-shape so it can slam it into the ground. It’s also capable of shooting fireballs.
Third is another Bird Wyvern called Great Izuchi, which apparently moves about in groups of three, with two smaller monsters always flanking it. They attack with swift tail movements, either all at once or in succession, requiring players to develop a sense of timing.
Last, there is the Amphibian monster called Tetranadon. It can expand its body by swallowing up gravel, before charging at hunters. When its body shape changes, so do its attacks, meaning players will need to change up their strategies on the fly to deal with it. At one point in the footage shown, it gets into a fight with another monster and attempts to eat it whole, which is quite horrifying to watch.
This news comes as development and support for Monster Hunter World come to an end, though Capcom still has plenty of content to include in the near future, including a final battle against the Elder Dragon Fatalis, which has been a series regular since the first game.
Capcom certainly is winning fans’ approval at the moment, as this announcement follows on from yesterday’s PlayStation 5 showcase, where Capcom revealed Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition as a launch title for the new console.
Monster Hunter Rise will release on Nintendo Switch on March 26th 2021.
