During a Nintendo Direct Mini today, Monster Hunter Rise was announced exclusively for the Switch. While Monster Hunter Rise includes numerous new features, its traversal mechanics seem to be one of the most important additions to the next game in the series.
With Monster Hunter Rise releasing early next year, the game is clearly far along in its development. The trailer released today shows a refined Monster Hunter experience with many of the features that players would want, including something that was not in Monster Hunter World: A voiced protagonist. While some old-school fans rejoiced over being able to hear the main character speak, they may have missed out on just how deep Rise’s movement system looks.
Many rumored features for the game seem to be true, such as Rise running on the RE Engine, and the deeper traversal suggested ahead of its reveal looks promising. The game will feature traversal surrounding Wire Bugs, which appear to be a different take on the grappling hook seen in Monster Hunter World. Players can use the bugs in combat while also grappling to walls and thin air, a huge step forward for the series and its movement.
Beyond that, Monster Hunter Rise will be pulling from the consistent top 10 Switch seller The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Zelda game was praised for how it evolved open-world gameplay, especially in terms of traversal. Monster Hunter Rise looks to be adopting a Breath of the Wild style of climbing anything in sight, with players now able to scale many of its walls and objects.
This is an especially fitting addition for the Monster Hunter series. Scaling walls opens new possibilities when tracking down some of Monster Hunter Rise’s new creatures, and could add some variety to the chase that happens when monsters are injured. Being able to cut off a monster or attack from above may give players an advantage they would not have been able to have in previous games, making the new traversal system a potentially welcome addition.
Another new entry in the Monster Hunter series was also announced during the mini direct, titled Monster Hunter Stories 2. With both this sequel and the deeper mechanics of a new Switch exclusive game in Monster Hunter Rise, fans of the series have a lot to look forward to in 2021.
Monster Hunter Rise will be available on March 26, 2021 for Nintendo Switch.
