Sony is launching the PS5 this November with some of the most anticipated triple A exclusives on the next generation of consoles. However, the gaming giant has also announced that some PS5 exclusives will be a little more expensive than some fans might have hoped.
Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake will cost $69.99, and while Spider-Man: Miles Morales will cost $49.99 independently, the game will have an Ultimate Edition version that fans will need to get for $69.99 if they want to play the remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man as well. This could have big implications for both Sony and pricing across the next-gen consoles.
This is an increase of roughly $10 on average for some of the most anticipating exclusives for the next-gen. The PS5 will cost $499.99 (standard) or $399.99 (Digital Edition), so the price increase has come as a surprise to fans who are already expecting to pay a lot of money upfront in November for the console itself.
By increasing the prices on the games it has exclusive rights to, Sony has drawn a line in the sand. By setting its triple A exclusive titles at a roughly $70 price mark, Sony is creating a larger divide between triple A games and huge free-to-play games like Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzones. It is easier than ever for gamers to get a console and play on it for years without ever paying for a game, which is one way Sony could justify the price increase.
However, it is also likely that the company is taking advantage of some of its most anticipate titles, and hopes that by increasing the price on some of the main exclusives, it can make additional profits without having to increase the price of the console itself and risk negative comparison with the pricing of the Xbox Series X.
The PS4 outsold the Xbox One by over double the units sold, so it is also likely that Sony hopes to take advantage of its perceived head start in the coming generation, and some of the IPs it was able to strengthen like Spider-Man and God of War on the PS4. It also appears that the Xbox Series X and PS5 are both increasing the pricing for certain games. NBA 2K21, for example, will cost $59.99 on the PS4 and Xbox One, but will cost $69.99 on both of the new consoles.
The last major leap forward in video game pricing like this came when Activision announced that Call of Duty 2 would cost $59.99 as the PlayStation 2 and Xbox generation gave way to the PS3 and Xbox 360. That standard has held true for triple A video games until now.
While it is evident that Sony has predicted that people will continue to buy the PS5 and the PS5 exclusives enough to justify increasing the price, the choice to increase the average triple A game price to $70 could come at a bad time for a lot of would-be buyers. Indeed, many who were stuck at home this year and were looking forward to all the game releases in November 2020 may find some of the new games stretching their budgets thin.
However, this could also potentially make people willing to pay more for well-produced immersive escapism. Sony is certainly taking a gamble, but the company has made its intentions clear, and some will accuse the video game giant of taking an anti-consumer stance during a particularly difficult time. Sony is interested in buying more developer studios, and so could also increase its roster of exclusive games. Whether or not the company’s bet will pay off, however, remains to be seen, but with the Xbox Series X potentially raising its prices to match, gaming on the next generation of consoles could have additional costs that fans were hoping to avoid.
The PlayStation 5 is set to launch in the US on November 12th, 2020.
