Spider-Man: Miles Morales – Who Are The Underground? | Game Rant

Spider-Man: Miles Morales just got a new gameplay trailer and a release date of November 12, 2020. The game picks up one year after the events of the previous Spider-Man game, and the new video revealed that the story will revolve, at least partially, around a war between energy company Roxxon and “a high-tech criminal army” known as the Underground.

There have been several organizations called the Underground in the different Marvel timelines. However, since other details referenced in Spider-Man: Miles Morales appear to set the stage in a similar way to a plot-line in the Ultimate Marvel run of comics, here’s what fans can expect from the Underground in the upcoming game.

There is an organization called the Underground that has operated in the Marvel comics before. In the Earth-616 run, the Underground is a coalition of heroes led by Captain America, formed as a resistance to a Hydra dictatorship. Miles Morales’ Spider-Man was a part of that organization, but the Underground as featured in the upcoming game appears to be an entirely new creation of the developers.

However, this version of the Tinkerer appears to be similar in backstory to the one from Earth-1610, Elijah Stern. Stern worked for Roxxon, but was fired when he was about to discover a way to harness unlimited energy from vibranium. Seeking revenge, he hired the Vulture, Omega Red, and Killer Shrike to destroy his past employer, including sending the Vulture to kill Donald Roxxon, the CEO.

This appears to form the basic skeleton for the story shown in the new Spider-Man gameplay demo, though it’s clear some big changes have been made. The Tinkerer is far more hands-on in their approach, fighting on the front-lines instead of sending other villains to do their dirty work like in the comics. The Underground appears to take the place of the coalition of villains the Tinkerer formed in the comics, which could imply that the character’s villainy will be made more morally ambiguous in the upcoming game.

While Marvel characters change between most adaptations, it’s clear that the Underground has access to extremely powerful technology, and the purple light emanating from much of their equipment could imply that they are tapping into the immense power supplies that the Tinkerer was working on before they were fired from Roxxon. It is also possible that the energy source that the Tinkerer steals was one of the ones they were developing, which would play into the moral grays already established in the gameplay video, which describes Roxxon as “devious” and the Underground as “criminal.”

That framing and the new take on the Tinkerer could make them more sympathetic in this portrayal than in previous incarnations, and it is possible that the Underground is taking the place of villains like the Vulture in the game in order to portray the character as more morally ambiguous in this story. What is clear, however, is that even random Underground mooks are equipped with some serious tech, and judging by the grappling hooks the Tinkerer uses to tear the doors off a truck, the Underground could even swing through the city in a similar way to the player.

The ultimate motives of the Underground and the role they will play in Spider-Man: Miles Morales remains to be seen. However, it seems  likely that the choice of name, the moral ambiguity of the Tinkerer, and the potentially greater evil of the Roxxon Corporation could combine to make the Underground an unexpected ally in the upcoming PS5 exclusive.
