It has been two decades since the release of classic space combat games such as Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars TIE Fighter. Now, EA is set to return to the genre with Star Wars: Squadrons, which will put players back into the cockpit, offering a combat-focused Star Wars space simulator.

Of course, those who are excited to take control of these space ships once again and zoom into the hyperspace would be happy to know that Star Wars: Squadrons is set to release in just under a month from today. Now, for those interested in picking up the upcoming space combat title, here is a breakdown of everything players should know before purchasing Star Wars: Squadrons.

In Star Wars: Squadrons, players will take control of ships either from the Galactic Empire and the New Republic navy. These ships will each have their own movement of power, weapons, and other technology to help players defeat their opponents in combat. Below is the list of ships available from each faction, together with their respective classes.

Galactic Empire:

  • TIE Fighter – Fighter Class
  • TIE Interceptor – Interceptor Class
  • TIE Bomber – Bomber Class
  • TIE Reaper – Support Class

New Republic:

  • X-Wing – Fighter Class
  • A-Wing – Interceptor Class
  • Y-Wing – Bomber Class
  • U-Wing – Support Class

Overall, Star Wars: Squadrons will feature a single-player mode and two multiplayer modes, both of which are played exclusively in first-person. The game’s story is set after the Battle of Endor and the destruction of the second Death Star. On the other hand, the two multiplayer modes will include Dogfight, which puts up to 10 players split into two groups to battle against each other in a Team Deathmatch format. The second multiplayer mode is called Fleet Battles, which is somewhat similar to Dogfight, but the goal of players is to target and destroy Capital Ships.

Although there is a single-player campaign, the main focus of the game lies in its two multiplayer modes. However, creative director Ian Frazier revealed that Star Wars: Squadrons is not trying to be a live service game. It wants players to feel that the price they pay for the game is worth it and will offer a complete experience no matter which mode the player prefers. Additionally, there won’t be any loot boxes or any form of microtransactions in Star Wars: Squadrons.

The game’s story is set after the events of Return of the Jedi, and the main campaign will revolve around the perspectives of Case Kassandora from the Galactic Empire and Rao Highmoon from the New Republic. Moreover, both the main campaign and the two multiplayer modes will allow players to explore several locations in Star Wars such as Esseles, the Naidiri Dockyards, Sissubo, Galitan, and the Zavian Abyss. Moreover, other familiar areas will be present in the game, such as the battlefield in orbit of Yavin Prime that Star Wars fans would know is the Rebels’ base in A New Hope.

Players interested in picking up the game will be able to purchase Star Wars: Squadrons for $39.99. The game was first revealed back in June this year and is slated to release on October 2, 2020, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Last July, it has been confirmed that Star Wars: Squadrons will not receive a next-gen console upgrade, but both the PS4 and Xbox One versions should be playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

As for the PC version of the game, players would be happy to know that Star Wars: Squadrons will be available on the Epic Games Store, Steam, and Origins, giving players multiple options on where they could purchase the upcoming game. Star Wars: Squadrons will also feature HOTAS support and the game will also be playable at launch for both PC VR headsets and PSVR.

Lastly, players who pre-order Star Wars: Squadrons will receive a wide variety of in-game goodies, which are all cosmetic in nature. The bonuses include an Imperial Ace Flight Suit and a New Republic Suit, starfighter skins for each of the four New Republic and Galactic Empire starfighter classes, and a New Republic Recruit and Galactic Empire Decals.

Star Wars: Squadrons is set to release on October 2, 2020, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
