After a seeming eternity of waiting for official confirmation, HBO Max has finally renewed the precious and perfect Harley Quinn series for a third season. This news came after months of begging from showrunners and fans both big and small, even as big as The Suicide Squad director James Gunn himself.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations for the show’s hotly desired third season had been stalled for a while due to some fun executive antics at HBO Max. The two in charge of the platform, Bob Greenblatt and Kevin Reilly, were eventually replaced by Casey Bloys of HBO, allowing for the discussions to continue. As many involved had mentioned before, the biggest roadblock to renewal had to do with money, and once a new budget was hammered out, the way was cleared for Harley Quinn‘s triumphant return.
It’s truly difficult to overstate just how well-received Harley Quinn has been. Even while it was confined to the rather restrictive pages of the DC Universe streaming service, viewers knew it was something special. With an aesthetically pleasing art style reminiscent of Bruce Timm’s classic DC shows and writing far better than it had any right to be, its status as a beloved fan favorite was cemented once it gained a wider audience in its move to HBO Max.
But ask 3 different fans why they love it and they’ll give 3 different answers. For some, it’s the writing. An expletive-laden script that could rival Brooklyn Nine-Nine in terms of laughs-per-minute easily helps the show stand out above the rest. Meanwhile others might enjoy the character dynamics. It’s rare to see a show this funny feature characters this well-written. The relationship just between Harley and Poison Ivy is enough to grab viewers and hold them for dear life, but that quality extends to nearly every other character interaction in the show, from Harley’s crew of lovably murderous misfits to the genuinely heartfelt interactions between Barbara Gordon and her father.
Or aside from all that, perhaps someone else’s favorite aspect is the voice acting. Boasting a star-studded cast of comedians, celebrities, and Frankie Muniz, Harley Quinn‘s performances are top notch across the board. Though the actors themselves deserve plenty of credit for bringing these characters to life so well, the flawless voice direction from Charlie Adler, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey should not be understated as a big reason for the excellent character portrayals.
Harley Quinn is one of those once-in-a-lifetime shows like Arrested Development and Better Off Ted which bursts onto the scene swinging and immediately proves its quality. Unfortunately, that sort of comparison also brings to mind the premature cancelation of its peers. Better Off Ted only received 2 seasons while Arrested Development was canceled after 3, which was probably a blessing in disguise since more seasons of the latter would likely just be derivative and ill-advised and released in 2013 and 2018 respectively. But hopefully this renewal for Harley Quinn is only the first, because it deserves its audience as much as its audience deserves it.
Harley Quinn seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on HBO Max.
