Tom Holland’s apparent master plan to slowly plant himself in every nerdy property seems to be going along splendidly. That often-repeated rumor of a Legend of Zelda series reportedly in the works at Netflix has now added the possibility of Holland coming on to play Link himself in the currently unconfirmed project. Clearly Spider-Man and Nathan Drake just aren’t enough to slake his thirst for geekdom.
According to We Got This Covered, inside sources have suggested that not only is Netflix considering both a film and series based on The Legend of Zelda, but also that Tom Holland is currently one of their picks to play Link, who would presumably be the lead. This may suggest that the project in question will be a live-action series, but considering how Holland has done voice over work before, an animated series still isn’t out of the question. It should be noted that all information given here is unverified and still only based on rumors.
After he burst onto the scene as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Holland has consistently been one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood. From Marvel to Pixar to the Russo brothers and beyond, he’s made his mark on the industry and appears poised to launch even further. So it’s not terribly surprising to see studios clamoring for his talents.
But his appeal goes beyond star power. His relentless likability as Peter Parker/Spider-Man instantly drew in audiences only to ensnare them with his surprising range. On that note, it will be interesting to see how he, along with the writers and director, portray Link if the rumors are proven accurate. As one of the most famous “silent” protagonists, Link is essentially a blank slate for the player, and a non-interactive version of the character could be surprisingly difficult to pull off.
If Holland plays the character as mild-mannered and of few words for the sake of accuracy, that might not make for particularly interesting television. On the other hand, going too far in the opposite direction could have… less than desirable effects. So a cautious hand may be needed at the helm for this one. In a series where the main character’s personality is established by those around him, giving him a concrete identity could shake up more than just that one aspect.
However it potentially turns out, it will be a long time coming. Rumors about a Legend of Zelda series have been around for too long and a half, and until an official announcement comes along, they’ll likely continue with an oddly comforting regularity. In the mean time, why not speculate on who would be a great fit to play Zelda herself? (Too late, the answer is Hailee Steinfield and no further questions will be taken.)
