The Nintendo 3DS line, which has been in production since its release in 2011, will no longer be produced as of September 2020. But the history of the Nintendo 3DS hasn’t come to end quite yet: players will still have access to online services from Nintendo.
Earlier this week, Nintendo released a statement confirming that the line of 3DS would no longer be in production. There were six styles of the 3DS, including the original, the New 3DS, the XL, New XL, 2DS, and New 2DS XL. All six will no longer be produced, but fans of this long-running, extremely popular handheld series won’t have to give up on playing their favorite 3DS games just yet.
Nintendo has announced on its website that the online eShop for the DS line would still be live for a while yet, even though the 3DS systems are no longer in production. 3DS owners can still access the shop, buy new games, and redownload those they already own, as well as continue to use online services to play with friends. “The existing library of more than 1,000 Nintendo 3DS games contains many critically acclaimed titles and can provide years of content to explore and enjoy,” Nintendo said in a statement. It also mentioned that the online services would continue to be live for the “foreseeable future.”
While it arguably sad that such a popular and long-running handheld system is no longer going to be around, it’s wonderful that Nintendo is keeping the online service available for those who still play their 3DSs. The newest portable systems from Nintendo, the Switch Lite and Switch, are not a replacement for the 3DS for most fans. They just doesn’t have the battery life or the durability to be a truly portable game machine like their 3DS predecessor. Although there have been some rumors of a new Switch getting ready to hit the market, it most likely won’t be anything like the incredibly portable, foldable, and lightweight 3DS, which makes keeping the eShop open for the 3DS line even more important.
Hopefully, Nintendo will also give fans plenty of heads up when it intends to shut down the 3DS online services, giving its fans plenty of time to redownload or buy all the games they wish to keep forever. But just it case, it might be a good time to redownload all those Monster Hunter and Animal Crossing 3DS games that take a long time to beat, so there will be plenty of content on the 3DS for road trips in the future.
