The release of three beloved Mario titles packaged together in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection has had a mixed reception since announcement and recent launch. While fans are excited to finally play the long rumored Mario 3D collection which brings three classic Mario titles to the Nintendo Switch, many have taken umbrage with Nintendo’s approach to the release. Yet, the collection’s biggest area of criticism may actually be that it appears to just be a foundation according to modders.
The Super Mario 3D All-Stars release hasn’t been well received by a vocal portion of the fanbase. Some have even gone so far to calling the release of these three titles “lazy ports” regarding the quality of the games. All three generation spanning titles which include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy are not actually remasters, but emulated versions of the games.
It appears that while little has been done to touch up the three classic titles, modders have found that the emulation system itself goes beyond just these games. With the technically minded finally able to take a peak at the systems used to make these games run on the Switch, they have discovered an interesting detail. Within the emulator used in the collection, Twitter user OatmealDome, shared their surprising findings. Oatmealdome, who had previously revealed that the collection used an emulator, noticed that that the emulator itself has more GameCube and Wii features than what either Super Mario Sunshine or Super Mario Galaxy use.
OatmealDome provides two examples with “Bounding Box” and “ZFreeze” which are used in Paper Mario titles and a variety of sports games respectively. The reason for OatmealDome sharing these findings is that it may actually mean this emulator isn’t solely for Super Mario 3D All-Stars pack. The dataminer made it clear that this in no way means any more ports are coming to the Switch, but simply that there is more of a possibility due to these integrations.
While fans might be more forgiving of the collection if it serves as something of a foundation for more ports to come, some players are still unhappy with the quality of the games. Even through emulation, fans have expected more in the standard of the ports believing that the 35th anniversary collection of Mario titles deserved better. Beyond just the quality of the games, Super Mario 3D All-Stars has been plagued with controversy. Probably the biggest sore point has been Nintendo’s decision to make Super Mario 3D All-Stars a limited release both physically and digitally.
So while some theorize that this is just the start of more ports to come, others still feel the collection deserved better. As players explore the changes, one confirmed and hilarious one is that a famous meme line got cut from Super Mario 64. Until Nintendo announces anything more, it’s all just speculation and further dreams of GameCube titles returning.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
