It has only been a few hours since the news about Microsoft acquiring Bethesda parent company, ZeniMax Media, but there is already news about The Elder Scrolls 6. It seems that the new consoles allow for a huge leap forward in graphics and streaming, promising that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be something truly remarkable.
In an acquisition that seems to have shaken the gaming world, Microsoft and Bethesda announced their partnership today. This means that games such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, and plenty more are now under a Microsoft umbrella. This is great news for Xbox fans, but many PlayStation users are troubled by this turn of events.
Todd Howard, the head of Bethesda, wrote about how partnering with Xbox in the past changed the way their games were made: “Microsoft quickly let us in on their next system, the Xbox 360. More than a PC port, our aim with our next game, Oblivion, was to usher in the next generation of gaming. With each game, from Fallout 3 to Skyrim, our studio and company grew, adding brilliant and like-minded studios across the globe. All of us sharing in the belief that expanding the reach of gaming was fundamental, whether it was on a pc, console, your phone, or the cloud.”
Microsoft announced that it would honor the exclusivity deals that Bethesda has for some previously confirmed games. This means that Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo shouldn’t be affected by this acquisition. The powerful Xbox Series X and S consoles will be fully used on plenty of other titles, including the next game in The Elder Scrolls series.
A new The Elder Scrolls game means that players can stop playing Skyrim in crazy ways. Bethesda has been using the same engine for nearly a decade, so an upgrade is long overdue. While using the same technology makes it easier to cut some corners for the sake of time and resources, upgrading to this next generation of gaming is the perfect time for something new. Xbox Series consoles are the best way to upgrade this technology, according to Bethesda.
Todd Howard mentioned that this acquisition gives Bethesda access to technology that will help improve many aspects of their games: “These new systems are optimized for the vast worlds we love to create, with generational leaps not just in graphics, but CPU and data streaming as well. It’s led to our largest engine overhaul since Oblivion, with all new technologies powering our first new IP in 25 years, Starfield, as well as The Elder Scrolls VI.”
With this acquisition and next generation technology, there is a lot possible for Bethesda right now. One of the first questions from fans was of course asking about a Fallout: New Vegas sequel. Obsidian hinted that Fallout: New Vegas 2 could be possible now that it is working more closely with Microsoft, but nothing is guaranteed yet. Sequels to Prey, Dishonored, and plenty more can all gain something from the Xbox Series technology. When one of the most renowned and awarded game studios pairs up with one of the titans of technology, almost anything is possible.
The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development.
