Right after the September 2020 PlayStation 5 showcase, Insomniac Games confirmed that Spider-Man: Miles Morales would release with an enhanced version of Spider-Man PS4, officially dubbed Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered. This update will allow Marvel’s Spider-Man to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5’s features and have overall improved visuals.
However, fans can only obtain Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered digitally by purchasing Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, which would give them a voucher code used to download the game to their PS5. The physical version of the Ultimate Edition also comes with a voucher, not with a physical copy of Spider-Man: Remastered.
As a result, some fans have wondered whether Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered will get a physical release for the PlayStation 5. When they took to Twitter to ask Insomniac about it directly, the developer replied that it has no plans to release the game physically. It didn’t give a specific reason why, but the answer provided does potentially leave the studio open to change its mind in the future.
In the same Twitter thread, another fan asked Insomniac Games if players would be able to transfer their save data from the original Spider-Man PS4 to the new Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered. The developer said “no,” so players won’t be able to use their original save files on the enhanced version of the game.
There are some other things fans should consider before making their purchase. Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition will cost $69.99. The standard edition costs 20 dollars less at $49.99, but it won’t come with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered. Alongside its enhanced visuals, the remastered game will also come with three new alternative suits for Peter Parker.
Spider-Man: Remastered also comes with its own trophy list, so returning players will have to obtain all of the trophies they earned from the original game in their new playthroughs. It’s unclear if the list will have new additions added to it, but the remastered version seems independent enough from the original that this may be possible.
Spider-Man: Remastered also comes with the original Spider-Man PS4’s The City That Never Sleeps DLC. This DLC contains three separately-released episodes that all added new missions, suits, and enemies to the original game. Fans may have to do everything from scratch all over again if they choose to get the remaster, but the visuals and other additions might make that return journey worthwhile.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to launch on November 12th, 2020 for PS5 and PS4.
